Retail Health Clinics MinuteClinic is a division of CVS Caremark Corporation, the largest pharmacy health provider in the United States. CVS Caremark Corporation launched the first retail medical clinics in the United States in 2000 and is the largest provider of retail clinics ("CVS MinuteClinic,” 2014). MinuteClinics are located in grocery stores, pharmacies, and large retail stores such as Target and Wal-Mart. These clinics have become increasingly popular since they came about in 2000. According to the journal Health Affairs, the number of visits to these clinics has quadrupled from 1.48 million in 2007 to 5.97 million in 2009 and topped 10 million in 2012 (Watson, 2013). MinuteClinics are staffed by nurse practitioners and physicians assistants who specialize in family health care practice. They are trained to diagnose and treat illnesses such as ear, eye, sinus, bladder, and bronchial infections along with strep throat. They are capable of treating minor wounds, abrasions, and sprains. MinuteClinics also offer wellness services such as sports and camp physicals, immunizations, and TB testing, along with smoking cessation. Routine lab testing and education is available for diabetics, patients with high cholesterol and blood pressure, or asthma. MinuteClinics located inside CVS are open seven days a week and provide patients with evening hours.
