What appealed me most about fashion design and product development is the concept, in my eyes fashion is “walking art”, it is a mixture of the oldest fashion to today’s latest trends. I love the fact that I can be so diverse and creative with my designs. Adding a new piece, changing the color or even making something that hasn’t even be thought of. I love being different, having out of the box, off the all ideas. I love making beautiful clothes and mix matching clothes together. I’m also going to double my major with Business management. the reason why I’m deciding to do that is because I’ve always wanted to own my own business and to be my own boss, it’s a big dream of mine. I read into the course and what it has to offer me and it was so direct and straight to the point, teaching you everything you need to know before getting into the industry. What really stood out to me is the 95% rate of the business management graduates that found a job right after graduation. To me that’s amazing! It’s also another big reason why I decided to double my major.
The “Advertising, Marketing, and Communications” field is more than just a major. It is dealing with people, using your mind, being creative, and being willing to step into the unknown. This career requires people who are able to take charge and handle tasks in the best manner possible, talents I believe I possess. To study this major at FIT, one must love fashion and be passionate about it. Fashion does not just involve clothing, but it can tell a story and can convey different emotions. For this observation assignment I positioned myself directly outside the HMV store in Woodgrove Mall. I set myself in the mall food court which allowed for a clear view of 75% of the store. I have a good view of the front half and the point of sale system, but a large poster obscures a large area of the left side of the store. I personally rarely shop at HMV, as I purchase my entertainment digitally or stream it from online sources. Recently HMV has moved into a new business model in which they sell more fan based merchandise. Examples of this include television or movie memorabilia, pop culture T-shirts, and other small items. I am more interested in this side of the store as it seems to have saved the brand in Canada. HMV Canada is the only HMV chain still thriving and I am curious to see who is supporting the store. I do not believe that the fact that I do not often shop at HMV will affect how I approach this research, but will instead help me.
I am interested in business not only because of exposure to career fields my family has chosen (marketing, sales, accounting) but in addition to how fundamentally business has stayed the same for centuries. While technology is always changing, balance sheet, profit and loss statements have been around for centuries. Due to this, I see an opportunity to learn skills from the Business Magnet program that will not become obsolete but rather create building blocks that I can build off of when I attend post secondary schooling. While in the meantime, I can use these skills in my many business ventures that I currently partake in.

Conducting business today is extremely energy-intensive, which has led to the depletion of our natural resources and degradation of the environment. My goal is to become a Sustainability Manager for a retail or consumer goods company whose sustainability goals are aligned with mine, such as Ikea or Nike. In the long-term, I hope to move up within the organization and become the Head of Sustainability.

Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world. The position Wal-Mart holds gives the company a large responsibility to contribute to the community that supports the stores. As an organization Wal-Mart owes its success to the stake holders of their business. Wal-Mart requires the community to continue business operations, Trevino and Nelson state that “a major stakeholder in business must be the communities of which corporations and other organizations are a part” (2011). Wal-Mart must consider the community happiness with their business decisions to remain profitable.
The answers to these questions can help guide your selection of a college major. For example, if you held part time positions in retail while in high school and you absolutely hated the work, you can immediately scratch retail management off your list. However, if you enjoyed the part of the job that involved setting up product displays, you might seriously want to consider a major in visual merchandising.
