“Hear me! We've heard of Danish heroes, Ancient kings and the glory they cut for themselves, swinging mighty swords!”(Beowulf, 1, 2, 3) “Now let me entertain you with a story of the revenge and the harm is does.”(Barber) Revenge is a dish best served cold. It is also a reoccurring motif in the epic poem Beowulf. In a culture where loyalty and battle are the way of life, revenge closely follows. As we embark on our journey following Beowulf’s story we encounter four major revenge filled and spiteful creatures. Revenge is used very prominently to move the story of Beowulf from act to act. Unfortunately it also causes the death of many. “The monster stirred, that demon, that fiend, Grendel, who haunted the moors, the wild marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but earth. He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime.” (Beowulf, 15-22) Hatred leads to revenge and no one better could have started of the story than Grendel the murderer. This saying is exponentially greater when that woman is a mother seeking revenge on the man who has taken the life of her son. “A pleasant spot! When the wind stirs and storms, waves splash toward the sky, as dark as the air, as black as the rain that the heavens weep. Grendel's mother is hidden in her terrible home.” (Beowulf, 560-565) In her layer under the crashing waves of the coast Grendel’s mother plots her revenge. Once again we see the author vaulting the story toward the next battle which is the next act by forcing the characters to hate each other and seek revenge for a fallen friend or family.
