Harmful Impacts of Wealth and Poverty
Paradoxically, too much money and lack of it can ruin lives in a myriad of ways. These two views have been put across in two stories; Babylon revisited and I stand here ironing. These two stories are very different; one talks about too much wealth, and the other one talks about too much poverty. The lives of both the wealth and the poor are analyzed in the two stories in ways that reveal the damaging effects of too much poverty and wealth. Babylon revisited is a short story about a man who wasted all his money in clubs to an extent that he lost his wife and daughter. On the other hand, I stand here ironing is a story that depicts the extremes of poverty and had damaging it can be. Both show that extremes of either wealth or poverty can ruin lives in devastating ways.
Firstly is to see the impacts of too much wealth. In Babylon revisited, Charlie is a character who has too much money to waste around. The story revolves around his life and how much he has destroyed all in one stroke. Charlie is a wealthy man who lost his wife in the midst of his extravagant ways in Paris. Due to his irresponsible behavior, he also lost his only daughter, who was being taken care of by his sister in law. He is trying hard to prove that he has changed and is ready to take care of his daughter. On the other hand, the sister in law, Marion, does not trust him and keeps blaming him for the
After a national tragedy has struck the United States, a group of survivors now has to learn how to survive on their own. In Alas, Babylon a nuclear war has just started that has majorly decreased the population in countries around the world leaving nuclear fallout in its path. Alas, Babylon takes place in the United States, Florida in a small town called Fort Repose. Frank writes, in his book Alas, Babylon, about Randy Bragg and a small group of survivors from River road that band together to take on all the changes that face them without the help from the government. The three methods of survival that Randy and his band of survivors use are making ways to process items and recharge batteries; reinventing old ways of transportation and replacing
In his short story, “The Semplica-Girl Diaries”, the author George Saunders crafts an all too human tale as he shows the journal entries of the narrator, a husband and father of three who faces financial insecurity, and displays the effect money, whether in lack or excess, has on our actions and thoughts. The social setting of the story is almost identical to our current society, however there is a distinct divergence in the Semplica Girls, which are girls from impoverished backgrounds that hang from a wire in their heads as an odd, inhumane, and yet expensive, lawn ornament. In the pursuit of the “good life” for both his family and himself, the father places great importance on wealth in order to secure happiness, joy, and status through
The angst and concern of those in higher socioeconomic statuses are devoted to their appearance and prominence, while the lack of food and shelter cause complete desolation in the lives of lower socioeconomic statuses, also seen in where the character’s are born.
Have you ever wondered what life is like for people in specific social classes and all the baggage that comes with being wealthy? In the article “Amber Waves of Green”, author Jon Ronson has sit downs with hard working americans making a income of $200 a week all the way up to $625,000 a week. In another writing titled “The Mansion”, written by Michael Lewis, allows the reader to get insight on what life is like as a middle class individual taking on a higher style of living. Within the two articles the reader can point out that both Jon Ronson and Michael Lewis disagree on living styles, what wealth can do for you, and how it can affect the people around you.
In both I Am Legend and “By the Waters of Babylon,” the author and the director have very comparable styles when it comes to certain aspects of their work. The theme of both the film and the story revolve around the idea of humanity destroying itself due to the misuse of power and misunderstanding of the knowledge they had acquired. On the contrary, the mood in I Am Legend and “By the Waters of Babylon” are vastly different. In the film, the viewer feels the pain and loss embodied by Robert Neville himself; while in the story, John didn’t have any personal losses related to the catastrophic event that overtook those before him. Therefore the reader doesn’t connect to John in the same empathetic
The short story “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet is set in an post-apocalyptic time. It is about a young male named John. He is the son of the priest. While growing up, his father is giving him knowledge about all the things to become a priest like how to search for metal, the ways of the house, chants, and spells. When he gain enough knowledge he was purified. After being purified he went on a journey to the east and across the river to see the Place of the Gods. The Hill People are forbidden to go east to the Place of the Gods. While he was going east, he saw the gods and and noticed that they were only humans like all the other people. This situation shows that there is a difference
Alas, Babylon, by Pat Frank, takes place in Florida, USA, during a nuclear war between them and the USSR. Much like the small, ancient city of Babylon, the United States of America was destroyed and its citizens, the ones still alive, had the immense task of rebuilding the former superpower nation of the world. Dan Gunn, Fort Repose`s doctor explained to Randy Bragg, our protagonist that “some nations and some people come apart like fat in the pan. Others meet the challenge and harden. [He thought he was going to harden]” (Frank 133). Although he was talking to Randy, the quote applied to him as well. Randy had to figure out how to lead a very scared city that was falling apart and Dan had to treat the many patients without the luxury of having conventional methods available.
“Babylon Revisited” by F. Scott Fitzgerald teaches the reader that the past can affect the future. The main character, Charles Wales, is a man who lost the custody of his child due to alcoholism and whose wife has died. The story starts off this his new start, he rarely drinks and is set to be a better person and have his daughter (Honoria) in his life once more. Charles, who is also addressed as Charlie, comes back to the city of Paris where he once has partied and surely the memories of his past are brought up. No matter how much he has believed to have changed, his alcoholic past is a topic sent creating the future he would rather not live in.
Nearly every person alive has felt the struggle of not having enough money and worrying about fitting into to a higher society. The short story written by Graham Greene, “The Destructors”, demonstrates the difference between classes of society. The short story written by D.H. Lawrence, “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, demonstrates the anxiety over money in poor family. Both of these two short stories appeal to the common man by presenting a universal theme. The theme of both “The Destructors” by Graham Greene and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence is the struggle between class and wealth however difference in character and setting drive the two stories apart.
In “By the Waters of Babylon,” “Nightmare #3,” and “There Will Come Soft Rains,” (Bradbury and Teasdale) many different ideas are expressed; however, the primary concept pointed out in all of them is the post-war and destruction. In the short story “By the Waters of Babylon,” it is set in the future outside of an impaired New York (page 7). The Priest’s Son, who goes the journey, finds a dead man in the city that appears to have been destroyed in a war or by a bomb. In the poem “Nightmare #3,” the machines were revolting against the humans and creating a human-technology conflict/war (page 1, line 1). In Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains,” there is radiation glowing around the city advocating that there was a nuclear war or a bomb (top
Money is typically a neutral, necessary item that makes a big impact on one’s everyday life. To make their points, authors often add a certain connotation to the people that use the money, rather than money itself. Nawal El Saadawi describes a society in which many use money for selfish reasons, often suppressing other groups, like women, in the process, which represents a negative attitude toward the people that use the money. In her novel, Woman at Point Zero, Nawal El Saadawi frequently mentions the appearance of physical money through linked scenes to illustrate that, although one’s power in society often dictates other people’s perception of him/her, he/she should still attempt to gain respect through hard work and attitude.
The SPENT game and article helped me get a new understanding of people in poverty. The SPENT game showed me ways that people in poverty have to make difficult decisions, many happening to be between money and family. The article helped to explain myths people have about poverty and what the realities
This story is a remarkable novel about the harmful effects of wealth, such as how the wealthy solve the problem of poverty by rejecting conscience. The assumption then is that Eliot Rosewater spends most of his time for people, who are almost incompetent enough to deserve it. He decides to help only because he was born rich and feels guilty. Moreover, he is not capable of understanding the nature of people's problems. Wealth is not enough to wisely help those in need: without knowing their ultimate goal, it is unlikely that someone will be able to help. This is not the only dilemma seen between the rich and poor. Another dilemma is how to properly dispose of the money to improve the condition of the people in need. In the same way, the person who helps does not know how to provide adequate

Iraqi society is quite proud of its different types of architecture and design. Their buildings have evolved and taken different shapes over Iraq’s history. In the time of the Babylonian civilization, the City of Babylon was famous for not just its decadence, but also the manner in which the houses and other buildings were constructed. During the era of the Abbasid Dynasty the Caliphs built many sites that are still standing until this moment. Buildings such as Al-Mustansariya (Fig: ) university and several mosques like Al-Malwiyah ( Fig: ) in Samarra, were built by the Abbasids.
