He gives many reasons why imprisonment simply does not work, and suggests that corporal punishment should be used as an alternative. Published in the Boston Globe, a newspaper well known for being liberal, Jacoby provides a conservative view and directs his argument towards those who strongly support imprisonment and view corporal punishment to be highly barbaric and inhumane. Advertisements are everywhere. From billboards, to magazines, to newspapers, flyers and TV commercials, chances are that you won’t go a day without observing some sort of ad. In most cases, companies use these ads as persuasive tools, deploying rhetorical appeals—logos, pathos, and ethos—to move their audiences to think or act in a certain way. The two magazine ads featured here, both endorsing Pedigree products, serve as excellent examples of how these modes of persuasion are strategically used.

The United States, as many believe, is the land of opportunity, however, when looking at individual states, towns, and cities, this popular slogan may seem false to some. Within each state, all schools, such as middle and high schools, may not receive or offer equity. Speaking to the graduating class about the need to keep pushing for change he gave the students at the historically black university advise on how to shape your own future and to always strike for better. The president argues that the U.S and the world is becoming a better place than when he was a collage student. The Editorial Board of The Sacramento Bee, in their opinion editorial, “California is Adult in the Room Amid Childishness Over Bathrooms” (16 February 2016), argues that going to the bathroom is a necessity, and thus, lawmakers should not pass laws that base the legal use of bathrooms on the gender from one’s birth. They support their claim by first exposing the faults in the opposite side's opinions, then providing information on California’s plan for bathrooms, then promoting California’s policy that takes safety and comfort into consideration, and finally posing the solution of replacing gender-biased signs on the bathrooms with “all-gender” signs. Media is everywhere nowadays and is an outlet for everyone and anyone in the world to share their opinions. Opinions are nowhere near being the facts, opinions could very easily be twisted facts. That's why people have to be careful with what they see and hear on media. Although you wouldn't think that a newspaper article would be opinion based, it really is. In any public statement there is a bias and a bias is stemmed from one's opinions. At first glance you may think that the media source is solely facts but when you look back on it and dig deeper you get the sense of bias that an author has with their diction and their use of rhetorical devices. Therefore, reading one article on a topic won’t do anything to help you, you have to read multiple

To begin, the title that the author chose is very broad; therefore, it does not include the author’s approach to the essay topic. When creating a title, the author should consider their entire argument and include it to engage the reader. Next, the introductory paragraph is poorly structured because it does not contain a specific thesis statement. The author mentions the subtopics involving the relevance of Shakespeare to the modern world and Shakespeare’s outdated content towards the end of the introduction; however, there is no clearly stated thesis within the paragraph. The last sentence, which is commonly where the thesis statement is located, is in the form of a question rather than an opinion, which makes the structure of the thesis incorrect.

After some digging online I found this youtube video which is a speech made by the first Hindu woman elected to congress back in 2013. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard speaks about being the first Hindu American Member Of Congress. I believe this video is important because it displays the growing consensus of Americans for gender, race, and religious equality. Her speech also touches base on the points of discrimination, persecution, and misconceptions the Hinduism. Her words help to shed light on these issues and her ambition and vision are an empowering to her people. Many things in our world go unnoticed and the people do not know the reason it started or who started them. 99 percent invisible is a small radio show, that raises attention to the things that go unnoticed in the world that shape it. Aids awareness is one of them when an art project started by a group called visual aids that created red ribbons to raise awareness for this issue. 99 percent invisible brings light to the people behind the start of a powerful movement that has affected the world. This podcast is highly effective and well done, it gives all the information needed in a very audience-friendly manner.
