Andy Boxall’s hard news article “THE ALL-SCREEN APPLE IPHONE X IS HERE, AND IT’S THE NEW IPHONE YOU’LL WANT” and Ben Lovejoy’s opinion article “The good news and (mostly) bad news on the iPhone X notch [Poll]” both present information on the new iPhone. Both writers inform readers about the new technology, but how they deliver it and the reasons for it are diverse. Boxall focuses on informing the reader of the release of the phone by integrating facts such as when he explains “Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone is finally here, and it’s called the iPhone X. The Cupertino, California-based company made it official at an event on the Apple Campus in the Steve Jobs Theater.” Contrastingly, Lovejoy’s purpose is to inform the audience by expressing …show more content…
People involved in the IT industry and people who use technology, including current Apple users, affluent young adults and adults who have money to spend on a new phone have been targeted by the authors of the texts. Boxall’s text appeals to all as it is a factual article, whilst Lovejoy’s opinion text appeals to those interested in his subjective viewpoint. Boxall’s text is factual and he provides unbiased information such as “The screen, which takes up the whole of the phone’s front panel, is made from surgical-grade stainless steel, with glass on the rear panel. It’s water- and dust-resistant, and available in space grey and silver.” By stating these facts, his information is directed towards technologically savvy people who understand the phone’s complicated features and functions and are appreciative of the information. On the contrary, Lovejoy’s opinion is negative and his audience is people who desire an expert’s opinion on Apple’s new release. This is clear by Lovejoy including critical information such as “The first piece of bad news is photos. 16:9 photos are fine, as those are just centred on the screen. In May of 1998, Kipland Kinkel brought a gun to his school. Over the course of two days this escalated from: being sent home, to murdering his father and mother, to murdering 2 students and wounding 26, earning a lifetime sentence of 111 years and 8 months in prison. In the court case being examined, the presiding judge addresses the original case, defendants ground for appeal, and the justification for the State’s decision to deny the appeal. Judge Haselton effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos to support the Higher Court’s decision to deny the appeal because the original sentence was constitutional and just.
In the article “Requiem for Real News” written by Chris Hedges, Hedges makes an argument that society is losing expertise with the news now changing from print to online. The change from print to online is also causing a change in what is deemed news. Upon first look on this article, this argument seems to be effective; however, the argument is not effective. While Hedges has some strong pieces of pathos like when provoking anger in the audience of the working men and women towards corporations and use of cause and effect strategy, extended definitions, and comparisons to logically make an argument that corporations want the public to be in the blind, Hedges fails to present enough ethos to back up his argument which ultimately causes his article to become an ineffective argument.
The New Yorker is a celebrated magazine that is known for its reporting, essays, and political commentary. Its exemplary status is also attributed to its cartoons and illustrative covers, which are often satirical reinterpretations of current affairs. The demographic of the people who read the New Yorker provides a clue as to the whom the advertisement’s target audience is. They tend to be on the liberal spectrum, mostly college educated people in their early 30s to late 50s.
The rhetorical analysis I composed was written on an article called,“The confessions of a liberal gun owner,”by Justin Cronin. This type of writing opened me up to a new style of composing that I am not familiar with. I really enjoyed being able to show my view of whether I thought that this article was effective. Critisizing the writer for doing certain things was very interesting and made me feel more independent and powerful. I did not like that I could not use my personal opinion but could use what I thought as the audience of the paper. This confused me at first but I eventually understood the reasoning behind it. In the past, I have done many research papers for science, history, and English classes. For my AP English classes, I learned how to identify rhetoric and analyze how it affects a piece of writing as a whole. In chemistry and biology classes, I researched a certain chemical reaction and wrote a paper on why that happens. In AP US History class I spent hours on learning how to write a grey area thesis and finding evidence to support both sides of an argument. A strength I have as a writer is that I have experience in doing research in most fields of study. I took various AP classes in high school and have written papers in most of them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a government website that provides information about various diseases, disabilities, disorders, etc.. The CDC provides multiple webpages about Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) that list and provide information about causes, treatments, variations, and signs/symptoms of the disorder. On their informative pages, they use rhetorical devices to better portray their message. The CDC effectively uses the three rhetorical devices, pathos, ethos, and logos, to reach their goal of informing their target audience and providing a clear perspective on Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone at the Macworld convention in January of 2007, a tidal change in the way users communicate with one another was unleashed. The phone, which combined the already popular attributes of an iPod with the traditional cell phone, was an instant success, selling millions of units even at the initially haughty price of $599 each (Vogelstein, 2008). The theory behind the creation of the phone was deceptively simple: combine an MP3 player with a Blackberry, camera, and regular cell phone operating on a sleek touch-screen controlled software system. Consumers were finally freed from carrying separate devices to perform all they tasks they now wanted to away from home. In one simple hand-held device they could take pictures, listen to music, play games, communicate with friends and family, and even surf the Internet. This one device changed the way that people began sharing information, allowing them to instantly access information anywhere in the world while also transmitting it just as quickly. The iPhone is now universally recognized and has become a cultural artifact in our times.

In “Bring Back Flogging”, Jeff Jacoby addresses the problems within America 's criminal justice system. He gives many reasons why imprisonment simply does not work, and suggests that corporal punishment should be used as an alternative. Published in the Boston Globe, a newspaper well known for being liberal, Jacoby provides a conservative view and directs his argument towards those who strongly support imprisonment and view corporal punishment to be highly barbaric and inhumane. The separation of church and state is an ongoing debate that effects everyone, even if you are not aware of it. There are many arguments to this debate, and both sides are heavily supported. I will be analyzing two sources that support the separation of church and state but used two different forms of rhetoric to support the separation.
The United States, as many believe, is the land of opportunity, however, when looking at individual states, towns, and cities, this popular slogan may seem false to some. Within each state, all schools, such as middle and high schools, may not receive or offer equity. In response to Geoffrey Shepherd's article “It’s clear the US should not have bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki”. Shepard tries to pull us into his claim by using pathos, logos, and ethos. He uses estimates of 500,000 Japanese soldiers died from the atomic bomb. Then Geoffrey begins to state that we had an alternative spot to drop the bombs, the alternate spot we could’ve dropped the bomb would have been Tokyo Bay. It was idle and estimated that less lives would’ve been taken and would showed more of a threat to the Japanese leaders.
With Apple being so far ahead of their competition, the only problem one can foresee in Apple’s future is how long they can sustain such innovation before they plateau. Apple does a phenomenal job at releasing their innovative products before their competition, but if their innovation cannot hold steady, this may lead to changes in demand for their products considerably. This can be seen with their release of the iPhone, the first successful touch screen cellular phone. Although people swarmed to the iPhone when it was first released because of its advanced technology, as the years have passed, other similar designs, including those with android and windows based operating systems, have drawn a considerable portion of the market. A clear representation of Apple’s attempt to regain some of this market can be seen when the iPhone was released to Verizon Wireless’ customers in
