The Demographic Imperative is crucial for intercultural competence seen from the recent mistakes of an uneducated spokesman, Miley Cyrus. From her last racy performance to this year’s racist lingo and attire, Cyrus demonstrated a perfect example of the horrible ignorance to the demographics of an audience. Increasing in diversity, the demographics of the United States have changed dramatically over the past few decades; “The U.S. population is now more than 308 million, of which 62.3 percent are European American, 16.3 percent are Latino, 12.6 percent are African American, 4.8 percent are Asian American, and 1.1 percent are Native American. About 2.9 percent of people identify themselves as belonging to two or more cultural groups. (Intercultural
The commercial can be broken down into the three rhetorical appeals. The appeal to character, by having Rihanna serve as the main subject, engages the viewer instantly. However, Rihanna serves a purpose through her involvement, as a celebrity, “For the fan, celebrity culture can produce intense identification at rock concerts, athletic arenas, and other displays of the fantasy object, whether live or recorded and mechanically reproduced. Such identifications can lead to role reversals where the fan covets the wealth, honors, and supposed power of the celebrity”(Weeks). The commercial allows the viewer to have intimacy with the superstar, by gazing at her getting ready right before her performance. Rihanna fans are able to catch a glimpse of her intimate moment backstage, which identifies the social status of the viewer and the singer as equals. Rihanna’s established beauty is also a factor for why she is chosen to sell the product, “This distinction focuses on the appeal of beauty as a social control: As images of beauty continually shift, insecure consumers may perpetually justify their purchases of products and services. By endlessly manipulating and redefining beauty, advertising and corporate profits are secured”(McDonnell). What the character conveys intertwines with the logic of the commercial; if a superstar beauty like Rihanna cannot resist temptation, how could an ordinary person possibly resist the Twinkie as well? The epitome of beauty displays gluttony and her
Many great writers have a way of connecting to their audience and influence the way we analyze their writing strategies. Cheryl Strayed created a biography, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, about her life changing experience that allows us the opportunity to apply aspects of a rhetorical analysis to her writing. Cheryl’s memory of her journey along the Pacific Crest Trail, that extends over 1,000 miles from Mexico to Canada, provides us with explicit details and evidence that tie into her motives and conditions for writing and her intended audience. Cheryl also makes appeals to her knowledge, trustworthiness, and emotions that help us illustrate her insights as she traveled along the trail.
Queen Elizabeth I is considered to be one of the most powerful women in history. In 1588, as ruler of England, she was faced with an invasion against Spain for control over trade in the new world. Her “Against the Spanish Armada” speech was addressed to the English Army at Tilbury Fort to help motivate and boost assurance, as well as showing support to her troops over the battle they were about to face. With her passionate words and courageous way, Queen Elizabeth establishes a connection with her soldiers; appealing to their patriotism and emotions through logos, pathos, and ethos. Although she was uncertain of a “famous victory”, Elizabeth instills the reassurance they need to fight against Spain and leading them to victory in the end.

Hip-Hop is an all-encompassing term used to reference a genre of music, as well as a subculture that made its first appearance in New York City by African-Americans in the poverty-stricken South Bronx streets during the 1970’s. Hip-Hop began as a trendy medium of musical protest against the injustices suffered by Black and Latino men, but quickly evolved into a lifestyle focusing on the creative expression of emotional, and political experiences shared by ethnic cultures throughout the United States. The emergence of hip-hop culture was expected to be a trend that would disappear in a fashion similar to that of the disco movement, but rapidly became one of the most influential subcultures in today’s American society. Despite the boundless impacts

One of my favorites was delivery by Viola Davis after she won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She delivered a strong emotional speech which made it feel personal to her audience. As an actress, she learned how to have the vocal presence, convey emotions through speech, and have creative insight. She knows how to deliver a speech within a time frame and delivery lines that are going to stand out.
