Tickets to see Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway are sold out until mid-2017 and prices for a ticket reach up to $1,000. The hip-hopera sensation is sweeping the nation, from old people to children alike. “It is the story of America then told by America now,” explains its writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show brings up current topics set in old settings and makes them new again. One would hardly think a hip hop musical about a founding father would be something to be considered worthy of literary merit, but I would go as far to say that Hamilton is just as worthy as The Color Purple and Invisible Man. As Kelly J. Mays puts it, it must be a story that “engages our emotions, our imagination, and all of our senses, as well as our intellects.” It must not be merely a story, but rather a representation of an experience, thereby becoming an experience for its audience. Hamilton, being a stage show, is going to be an immersive experience regardless of the content simply because it is being literally brought to life right in front of its audience with no middle man of the imagination involved. That being said, the content is an enormous part of what makes this story pop off the textbook page. Not only are the characters living out their lives and choices right in front of the viewer, they are involving them as well. The very first line of the show asks the audience a question: “How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?” Right from the get-go, the audience is involved in the story and on the the edge of their seats to find out the two and a half hour long answer to this question. This piece fits all of Mays’s criteria for a good piece of literature. Not only does it call out the issues of immigration and politics through its words, but it also brings out the issue of race through its casting. The characters are all white people, but none of them are played by white people. Not only does the show sharpen awareness of current controversial topics, but also of the knowledge of the founding of our country. During the American Revolution, the men fighting and planning were going through some really tough times, and it is hard to think of people in the 1700’s as being more than old men with white hair, but as Miranda says in Hamilton, “Congress writes, “George, attack the British forces,” I shoot back, “we have resorted to eating our horses.” With the awareness of history having been the present at one point, we also realize that these were real people with real feelings and flaws, as Miranda demonstrates with Alexander Hamilton’s murderer regretting his decision, confessing: “I should have known the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me.” As Tom Teodorczuk sees it, a lot of Hamilton’s success comes from “contemporary relevance rather than celebrity currency,” which proves that the content is good enough that it does not need celebrities in order to get audiences.
