Martin Luther King Jr. was an extraordinary man who made an impact on his audience when he gave his speech on August 28, 1963. King was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout his life he had worked to find an end to racial discrimination against the Africans Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a speech called "I Have a Dream". This speech was written to explain to the audience that there needs to be an end to discrimination against the African Americans. He was also trying to persuade the audience to help him in the fight to accomplish his goals. To get his ideas across to the people he used rhetorical devices. Some of the devices he used were metaphors, repetition, and logos. In King's speech he used many rhetorical devices and one of them is metaphors. A metaphor is a comparison by saying one thing and meaning something else to give more emphasis. When King says "…America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds'.", by stating this, he is trying to say that the African Americans were owed the rights that they deserved. He is stating that America has failed to give them their rights. By using this metaphor he is trying to show the audience that the African Americans have went through a lot. He could also be persuading the audience to join him in is fight to end discrimination against the negro people. King used metaphors to compare what he is trying to say in a way everyone could understand, but it is not the only rhetorical device he used. Of the many rhetorical devices used in the "I Have a Dream" speech another would be repetition. Repetition is when something is written multiple times. It is used to make something more powerful. In King's speech he repeats the words "Now this is the time.." in paragraph 6. When he is using this phrase he is saying that it is time to make a change in the way America is today. Another way King uses repetition is by saying "I have a dream." By saying this he is showing the significance in why he is writing his speech.
