Almazan, Shiela Mae Ms. Domingo Expository Writing 26 February 2016 Stop Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle! Do you know what kind of beetle is this? Or Have you seen it somewhere? This is the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle or also called as CBR. This beetle was discovered in Honolulu, Hawaii on the 23rd of December 2013. It is invasive throughout the Western Pacific Region and native to Southeast Asia. Rhino beetles are large and black, and it can grow up to 2.5 inches but most of it is just big as our thumb size. Adult oriental flower beetles are often mistaken for the rhino beetle, but oriental flower beetles do not have a horn and are smaller than a rhino beetle which is up to one inch in length. They are small compared to rhino beetle. To identify easily …show more content…
However, many CBR traps have been set across the island of Oahu and are hung in the trees to survey and capture the adult rhino beetles. In these traps, it contains pheromone lures and solar powered UV/LED lights to attract these beetles. We do not have to worry about these traps because they are harmless to people and animals. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is collaborating with Hawaii Department of Agriculture, University of Hawaii, and the military leadership, both Navy and Air Force to survey palms for any signs CRB damage, survey and remove the known breeding sites, and is also coordinating a public education about the CRB damage and how the public can report suspected beetles or any signs of damage in plants. If you have seen any fallen traps or if you suspect CRB, contact the Hawaii Department of Agriculture immediately. The public can also help by not disturbing and removing of CRB traps, allowing authorized agricultural specialists in your own property to look for the beetle and hang a trap if you suspect that there is CRB, do not bring or mail any fresh vegetables, fruits, or plants except agricultural inspectors have cleared them and allowed you to do so. Hopefully, everyone is willing to cooperate and can able to help the authorities to eradicate this pest so we can prevent CRB invasion and save the
To re-attached the Triceratop horn. The mighty triceratops go to the dungeon of Hearty World and the pioneers there will receive their horn and get it glued back on. When the triceratops get their horn back they become very evil monsters that like to destroy everything in sight. It takes 15 years till the horn will stay on the triceratops head. Most of the time the pioneers won’t put the triceratops horn on because they don’t want the whole earth destroyed.
When consumer goods are brought from abroad and land on American soil, they often bring with them insect species devastating to our native vegetation. Just like how the Native Americans didn’t have immunity against smallpox when the Europeans settled, our trees don’t have immunity against the various bugs that trees in Asia, Africa, or South America have adapted to fight.
During the last decade, redbanded stink bug has emerged as a major stink bug pest species in Louisiana. The economic threat from redbanded stink bug is also rapidly increasing in the Mid-South and Southeastern region of the United States as it continues to expand its geographical range. Since redbanded stink bug is relatively new species in the existing sting bug complex, there is a lack of information about this pest compared to other stink bugs. One of the gaps in our present understanding is its potential spring hosts where its population can build up before migrating to soybean. Field observations have revealed that red banded stink bugs were present in high numbers on leguminous host like medic, clovers and vetch along rights-of-way, ditches
The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, is a beetle that was first discovered in 2002 in the US near the Detroit area and southeastern portions of Michigan. This beetle is believed to have originated in Asia. The theory is that they arrived in the states in packing material made of wood on cargo ships traveling on the St. Lawrence River, which then leads into the Great Lakes. Since 2002, this beetle has made its way into parts of Canada and now in at least eighteen states in the US (Emerald, n.d.). They are causing major destruction of Ash trees in all of these areas, and Vermont is starting to take precautions to be prepared if and when these beetles show up in The Green Mountain
The Boll Weevil is a beetle. A drought is when an area has no rainfall for a long period of time. The Boll Weevil feeds on flowers and lay eggs in the flower buds of cotton. The Boll Weevil came from Mexico to Georgia to destroy the cotton plantation in the 1890s. A Drought came in Georgia and caused destruction on the crops also. Since the crops and cotton were destroyed, farmers could not pay people to pick them. So, many people lost jobs, and banks that loaned money to farms took huge L’s. Also, most working farms fell. The Boll Weevil and the Drought destroyed Georgia’s farms and its crops, including cotton. Since the cotton was gone, the Boll Weevil
Question: Worlds within texts often prompt us to question the worlds outside texts. Write an essay in response to this statement with reference to at least one short story you have studied.
“‘Treat all people -- even the most unsightly beetles -- as though they were angels sent from heaven’” (29). In Mawi Asgedom’s memoir, Of Beetles and Angels, he talks about the obstacles he faces through growing up. Throughout Mawi’s life he overcomes the obstacles of racial prejudice, school bullies, and financial disadvantage, which motivated him to build a fulfilling successful life.
In June of 2011, the Asian Longhorned Beetle was found in Clermont County, about 30 minutes from where I live now. Clermont County is home to East Fork State Park, a 4,870 acre state park which is comprised of about 50% woodland. The Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) is an invasive insect in Ohio that will host in about 10 different types of trees. This is an important topic to me because this invasive insect is not only single-handedly taking down forests in Ohio, but the introduction of an invasive species also disrupts the soil, air, and water quality. I chose this topic because more people need to be aware of the little things they are doing that can affect the environment. By moving firewood, different types of lumber, or nursery stock to a location that is not affected by the ALB will just make matters worse.
Despite Wilson’s best efforts to stay neutral during World War One, he was was not able to accomplish that task. Entering the war was not going to be a fruitless endeavor, however. The main goals of American participation during World War One was to protect freedom and democracy, and to spread it to the other countries of the world, to help ensure financial stability, and to protect the ships that the German U-Boats were destroying. Wilson’s 14 points helped to reflect the goals of freedom and democracy by generally pushing for a more peaceful world. One of the main reasons for the 14 points existence was to share Wilson’s postwar hope for the world. In the fourteen points, he also lays out a proposition for freedom of the seas. This
God perfectly designed every animal to be fully capable to live their lives just how the need to. Each animal is way too complex to evolved into another form. To proof this, I will show you some amazing animals that God has created. The European Green Woodpecker's tongue comes from the back of the throat, travels from the back of its head, through its nostril, and out of its mouth. Clearly that is way too complex to be evolved, and evolutionist have no idea how because no other animal has that type of tongue. The Bombardier Beetle manufactures chemicals that makes a explosion to protect itself. There's no way that this bug could evolve, it needs all of its parts their all at once or you don't have the animal. God created this bug was created
Rhinoceros Beetle by Susan Hawthorne is a story about a young man with an obsession with animals and a penchant for treating women the same way. Rhinoceros Beetle undergoes a major tonal shift as the story goes from a whimsical tale of a destructive young boy, to a chilling story of a threatening and reserved man from a small town. As the story goes on, the foreshadowing becomes more obvious as you realize how suggestive and cacophonous the words are, which further develop the ominous tone. The way the author understates the boy’s actions in the beginning of the story take the reader down a path of realization as the implications of what he’d done later in his life becomes more apparent. The insipid yet obscure way that the short story is written ultimately leaves the audience in the dark with a few pieces of information that allows them to make an astute assumption of what happened to the women that were in the man’s home. Also, parallelism is used frequently throughout the story to portray the boy’s odd actions as being on the same level of his more mundane activities. All of these components successfully develop the ominous tone of the story, leaving the readers feeling that something awful or unpleasant was happening both in the boy’s past and in his now adult life.
Many people think that Ladybugs are bugs but they are actually beetles. Ladybugs commonly yellow, red, or orange with black spots on their body. There are about 4,300 kinds of ladybugs in the world. The ladybug is found all over the world and there is said to be more than 450 species in North America. The name “Ladybug” comes from Britain`where they became known as “Our Lady’s bird” or also “The Lady beetle”. The average lifespan for the ladybug in the wild is two to three years. Their spots and colors are meant to make them unappealing to predators. Their colors tend to fade as they get older. A threatened ladybug might play dead or crete disgusting fluid that will protect themself. Their Aphids. Aphids are soft insects that suck the
In 1993 Volkswagen had record low sales but by the end of 1997 the VW brand had sold 137,885 cars. That was an increase of 178% from it’s 1993 slump. It is safe to say that the the ’94 relaunch of VW on the American Market was a success. The “Drivers Wanted” campaign, developed by Arnold Communications, I believe was successful as a result of excellent market research and positioning.
Capital punishment or the death penalty is punishment by death of a person who has been legally tried in a court of law for a capital crime. The morality and constitutionality of the death penalty has recently come up for debate again after the European pharmaceutical companies, who produce Pentobarbital, one of the drugs most commonly used to execute the death penalty sentence via lethal injection, stopped exporting and allowing the sale of the drugs to the United States. (Steiden, 2014) (Levitt & Feyerick, 2013) Since then multiple lawsuits have been filed by incarcerated individuals and opponents of the death penalty after several states began looking into new drug combinations or having variations of the banned drugs created by compounding pharmacies locally. (Levitt & Feyerick, 2013) Two such lawsuits were filed by Clayton Lockett and Charles Warner, who were both found guilty of capital crimes and sentenced to death in Oklahoma. Both Lockett and Warner argued for a stay on their execution dates until the controversies over the new drug protocols adopted by the state of Oklahoma were cleared up. (Eckholm, 2014) Other lawsuits filed have argued that using untested drug protocols in lethal injections should be considered “cruel and unusual punishment.” (Levitt & Feyerick, 2013) The debate really heated up after Clayton Lockett’s appeal for a stay was denied and he appeared to have suffered for an extended amount of time during his execution. (Steiden, 2014)
The writer of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” Nia Vardalos, states the idea that in a household “the man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.” This metaphor between the head and the neck is represented in the relationship of Petruchio and Katherine. In Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, Katherine uses her power as the neck to make Petruchio believe what she wants him to; a tamed shrew, when in actuality, that is what she’s posing for him to see. Whereas in “A Woman to Her Lover,” Christina Walsh believes that women should boldly stand up for equality in a household instead of manipulating the man. When a woman uses manipulation instead of demanding equality, they are letting men believe that they are in charge which is an idea that will be passed down if women do not start to stand up. Both The Taming of the Shrew and “A Woman to Her Lover” encourage women to resist conforming to the sexist expectations of society in order to avoid being oppressed and objectified.
