In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, true heroism is shown throughout many events in the story. One of the many characters in the book, Lt. Carroll, was said to show heroism before the main character, Richie Perry, came to the war. Another example of heroism by Lt. Carroll is when he was trying to lead his squad to safety but ended up getting hit himself. The third way Myers showed heroism is when Monaco, one of the squad members, was captured by the enemy and Richie and Peewee, another one of the squad members, saved him.

There are many heroes, but there are those who sit back and question what or who makes a hero in today’s society. It has never been a set standard for heroes. In this modern world, there are many types of heroes. In today’s media, there is a contrast between million dollar sports figures, glorified celebrities, and the normal people we call heroes. Some heroes receive no recognition and others receive hero status with ease. However, it has yet to be determined whether our meaning of heroes has changed due to this influence. Whether it was nearly giving his life in the army, giving his time in the Government, or requesting to give to Lake Superior State in the form of a scholarship, he was always busy helping people. Although I have not had the chance to give as much as Hart did, I try to give as much as possible. Each Spring break I go on a small mission trip with my school. For the past three years we have gone to Tampa Florida and worked at Mary Help of Christians. This year, Mary Help of Christians opened up a Cristo Rey school. Cristo Rey is a schooling system that underprivileged high school students attend, they work for businesses earning money and business skills for half of the week, and are in the classroom for the rest of the week. This trip has opened my eyes and showed me how easy volunteering can be. I only spent three weeks of my own time, but because of this, hundreds of underprivileged kids will get to live a better life and get the chance to succeed.

On September 11, 2001 American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Center. William Rodriguez, a simple janitor, was considered a hero because he had played an important role in the 9/11 incident. He had helped many people evacuate the building for safety. He bravely led the firefighters up the building unlocking the doors, knowing that the building could have collapsed. He kept on going up the building helping people that needed his help, and as a result, he was able to help hundreds of people survive. Heroes don’t have to be super heroes, they are people who take risk and a lot of courage to help others.

An influential figure who has greatly affected my life is my pastor. He is Rabbi Robert Devine. Born September 21, 1926, in Port Gibson, Mississippi, he is the oldest of his siblings and now lives in Braxton, Mississippi, at the age of ninety. As a spiritual leader, he has made an impact on my life in significant ways through multiple aspects that are profitable in fulfilling my destiny. Rabbi Devine exemplifies the qualities of a Godly leader. As a leader, he exhibits the qualities of humility, service, and fortitude that helps him continue as strong spiritual leader.

Heroes always put their best foot forward in order to aid those in need. A few examples of people who have done this, are Abraham Lincoln, the man with the red bandana, and Frederick Douglass. First, Lincoln is a hero because of how he used his position of power to help those who require it. In White House Funeral Sermon for Abraham Lincoln by Dr. Phineas D. Gurley, Gurley mentions his virtues and how greatly they helped everyone. Gurley talks about the impact of how he made a great effort to help free those who were enslaved. Another demonstration of heroes trying their hardest to help in a difficult situation, is the man in the red bandana. The man in the red bandana, or Welles Crowther, saved people without hesitation after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. One day at my school’s mass Mr. D volunteered to tell a story that related the gospel and homily. For the first time in a formal setting he had caught my attention right away. He faced the congregation and told his inspiring story. A baby and his mother boarded a flight one day. Bad luck came their way and the plane crashed. The pilot was the only survivor. As the pilot was exiting the plane eagerly trying to save himself, he heard a cry from the passenger area of the plane. He managed to find his way to a little baby boy crying in the hands of his mother. The baby had survived by the help of that kind pilot. That miracle baby was my middle school teacher and softball coach. Mr. D’s lost his mother that day, but due to the kindness of another individual his life was saved. This experienced has influenced and driven this elderly person to teach the youth. Mr. D teaches English to children as well as teaches children sports, his true

Heroes are not always people who lead marches or do things for their country. For example policemen, firefighters, nurses, lifeguards etc. are heroes everyday because they take the time to save lives. When they’re going through a challenge or trying to overcome a conflict they always have courage. These people risk their own life to save someone else’s. To be more specific Dr. Ginger Holt from Dallas had saved a little boy’s leg. She was confident and determined to finding out what went wrong in the boy’s leg and went through many procedures looking at the tests.

Instead of forgetting and moving forward, sometimes people needed to continue to help others in similar, or even worse situations; “’It’s what bother me the most now, knowing that they are still there and I’m home. I hope we can do more to help more people’” (Stevenson 241). Marsha Colbey understood the struggles of the women she knew from prison, and instead of putting that trauma away, she used it to help others like her, and helped those that gave her the hope to persevere through those years. Role models built the foundation that people who share experiences can follow and look up to. My father, Michael Kim cited his own commanding officer as a the one who taught him “what it means to serve God and country” (Kim). As a teenager myself, having a role model like my father, someone who went through the same situations and troubles as me helped me when I went through difficult times in my life. Whether someone worked as a teacher, officer, or just happened to be a stranger passing by, everyone can help each other persevere through our lives. Everyday heroes are people that do little things to benefit other people or the community. We think that Mrs.Edmundson and Mrs.Hicks, the counselors at our school, are great examples of an everyday hero. Mrs.Edmundson created the Reach Team which is a program that allows kids in middle school the opportunity to Reach out to their community and interact with other people of varying ages. After Mrs.Edmundson created this amazing program Mrs.Hicks volunteered her time to help develop and make the Team better.
