Rick Riordan's The Blood Of Olympus

In the book Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, he analyzes the roles of two important men in Civil War history. One is Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate army, and the other is James Longstreet, a Confederate general. Both men play key parts in the battle of Gettysburg and their choices help direct the course of the whole war, both in their favor and against. While they are fighting on the same side, there are differences that distinguish them and cause conflict between them, and these differences will determine major turning points in the war.

According to the American Psychological Association, a 2014 article states, “Mental illness among today's inmates is also pervasive, with 64 percent of jail inmates, 54 percent of state prisoners and 45 percent of federal prisoners reporting mental health concerns” (Incarnation Nation). This statistic is appalling and should not be considered an acceptable number. More than half of jailers and prisoners report mental health concerns; this is static that should not be taken lightly and needs to be addressed. Mentally incarnated people and prison cells do not go well together; it creates a recipe for disaster for the individual suffering behind bars. The purpose of prison is to “retribution, incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation”

The Civil War began because of uncompromising differences between free and slave states over the power of government, in April 12, 1861. Most people died in the Civil War because of deadly diseases. The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the most important event in the Civil War. Soldiers fought from July first to July third 1863. Do soldiers really know how to treat an injury during a war? In the book The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara’s published in 1974, we are exposed to historical figures that could have treated their injuries and made them minor if they had modern medicine. With the medical training we have today the figures could have saved their limbs and known how to take better care of themselves in such uncomfortable situations.

Just Mercy is a powerful, eye-opening memoir about criminal justice, social justice, mercy, and race. Stevenson links all of these aspects together to create a narrative that exposes the corruption, prejudice, and abuse of power that runs rampant in our justice system. The criminal justice system today is prosecuting a disproportionately high rate of minorities, and they are shown less mercy than those who are white and privileged. This means that our criminal justice system is failing at promoting social justice, and we must fight for those who come from a different race or disadvantaged social background. Our justice system will not truly be just until we start promoting social justice by using mercy and leaving race out of the process.

On Agust 24,1955 Emmet Till a fourteen year old boy way on his way to visit his relatives in Money, Mississippi. He was charged of whistling at Carolyn Bryant who was a clerk at a grocery store. A few days later, some white men, Brayant's husband Roy and his half brother Milam took Emmet, beat him and shot him in the head. They went to court, but they lost because of an all white male jury. Emmet's open casket funeral influenced a Civil Rights Movement.

Making the jump from high school to college involves a deal of decision making that we, as teenagers, come face to face with. One of the biggest decisions we have is to choose a major and career. The novel, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, starts out similar to how our college careers are about to begin. We’re thrust into the next chapter of our lives, making choices and hoping they’re the correct ones and that we’re making them for the right reasons. Although, we are bound to doubt ourselves and these decisions.

The Killer Angels was published in 1974 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975. The author, Michael Shaara, was teaching at Florida State University and writing many science fiction and other subjects of stories at the same time. After publishing many science fiction stories and boxing subject novel, The Broken Place, he chose a different subject to work on, which was history about Gettysburg. He did research on first-person memories, diaries and letters, and spent seven years to finish The Killer Angels. The following review will include some main arguments of this book along with sources and evidence.

In Rick Riordan’s novel, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor, he showed many interpretations of a theme. One can be always have a second plan or even just stay alive. But, the main theme Riordan shows that being persistent and never giving up no matter the struggles that come can go a long way. For example, Magnus tells himself “at this point, most people would have thrown themselves down on the ground and given up hope.”(287) As Magnus continues on his journey with his friends, he finds that in order to find Thor’s hammer (Mjolnir) they have to work hard and face old enemies. The book Seize the Storm, is written by Michael Cadnum. I chose this book because my dad actually read this book and told me about it a few years earlier, and found it in the library and it looked cool so why not choose this book. The title of the book “Seize the Storm” just sounds like that would be a great book, which it was, plus the cover looked very cool.

This book review is on Guns, Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond. The book was very interesting but a lot of the information could have been cut because it’s a bit too long. Jared Diamond is a scientist, not a historian and he’s American. He upset many historians around the world by the way he bashes Europeans. However, he did win a Pulitzer Prize for the book so that says something.
