The book, I chose for my Book Talk #4 is The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey. It is the second book of the trilogy of the 5th Wave Book series. This book has a Lexile level of HL640L, the grade interest is ninth to twelfth, and the age range extends from 14 to 18 years. The Infinite Sea is a Science Fiction book, but it has hints of horror in the trope of the story.
The setting of the book is in Urbana, Illinois; a more urban city, but beautiful greenery. Though as in Urbana at this one throughout the book, white is approaching the city, and this is extreme bad as the winters in Urbana are harsh and dreary. The setting time is a bit more modern with communication and technology that we have to this day, but a bit less

She is a soldier at heart, or so it seems, but that is just the way Camp Haven made her. In Larry Lankton’s text, “Beyond the Boundaries” we gradually enter an unknown world that is frightening yet filled with immense beauty for miles. Due to the copper mining industry, a gradual increase of working class men and their families start to migrate to the unknown world with unsteady emotion, yet hope for a prosperous new life. In “Beyond the Boundaries”, Lankton takes us on a journey on how the “world below” transformed the upper peninsula into a functional and accepted new part of the world.
“By The Waters of Babylon” is a short story written by Stephen Vincent Benet that explores the innate behaviors of human beings and describes the aftermath of a nuclear war. In the beginning of the story, the narrator, John, introduces a taboo that is normal amongst his tribe,“The Hill People.” This indigenous law states that it is forbidden to cross the great river and to look upon the Place of the Gods, for it was greatly populated with spirits and demons. As a manifestation of John’s step towards adulthood or priesthood, John embarks on his curiosity voyage to the Place of the Gods, defying the well established rule within their tribe. Upon his arrival, he stumbles on an elusive and isolated setting with advanced technologies, which he deemed magical. Due to John’s expedition, he accumulated a plethora of knowledge and soon realized that the Place of the Gods was only a superstition and it was, in fact, a city of men.
The setting is based in towns in both the movie and book. However, the book’s setting was in a rural France and the movie takes place in a modern suburban in America. The time period in the book was 1640 and the time in the movie was in present day.
Some call accidents mistakes; others call them luck. But, no matter the accident, something is learned. Think of Dr. Alexander Fleming and his accidental discovery of penicillin in 1928 (Krock). If he would have discarded his old petri dishes without looking, this antibiotic may not have been discovered. That is evidence that any day could bring surprise, and, with understanding, people gain experience through mistakes. The speaker in “A Green Crab’s Shell” by Mark Doty has a similar unexpected discovery with a shell. Doty’s use of contrasting diction allows the reader to understand the speaker’s ultimate discovery of inner beauty. Even though the reader has conflicting ideas on the shell’s exterior beauty, the speaker has his moment of realization after flipping over the shell.
The setting of this story is in modern day England. The book did not really describe what time period it was supposed to be, but it seemed relatively modern. I think the book was set in a moderately sized town, because Omri walked to school everyday, and if it were a big city this would be an impossible task for a young boy. The setting wasn’t very important to the book because most of the story was about people and not necessarily their environment.
The story that spoke to me the most was “Don’t Eat Cat”. I identified with Owen, in that I know what it feels like for a loved one to wrong you and leave your life due to their wrong doings. On the surface it was the loved one who was at fault, while it was he and I who were wronged. Yet deep down we both knew that there was more we could’ve done. We knew that though they were wrong, we weren’t right. I felt like this story was Owen finally feeling the panic of knowing he would never see Marci again, and that it’s his fault. He came to that epiphany only after discovering his time was running short due to cancer. I feel like until that point though he grieved her, he never really let himself fully realize that she was gone forever. He recognized
As I stated previously, the book takes place in Chicago in
When she wakes up she is in an unfamiliar room in an unfamiliar house with an unfamiliar guy standing over her. Evan tells her how he found her near the highway and took her back to his house, how his family died, and how he has lived alone in the woods all this time. As Cassie’s leg heals they become close, but Cassie has her doubts about where Evan goes every night. Meanwhile, Zombie is in a training camp, in squad 53. Sammy, Cassie’s little brother, ends up in this squad as well. Zombie and Sammy bond as their squad rises up in the ranks. The top two squads at the camp will graduate, and are to go and fight the Others on the
It might seem as if Rick Yancey is one of many young adult authors, his way of describing and creating imagery is remarkable in comparison to others. On a related note, when he wrote The 5th Wave and The Infinite Sea he wrote in a way that was different, but relatable, complex, but rational, his writing was, to put it simply, extraordinary. The characters have rational fears and they have realistic theories involving our way of life. Yancey fills his books with sensible thoughts, semi-relatable situations, and, everybody’s favorite, drama.
The setting of this book takes place in Killdeer, Oklahoma (pg 2). This story took place in 2010, during the Iraq war. The town Killdeer, was named after the Killdeer bird that was popular in that area. The town had a population of 30,000. The book often talked about red dirt roads and their local Walmart, meaning they had a small country town. The story talks about the house she lives in, Red Earth, Viaduct and a paintball course. Even though there was few setting described, the ones that were used were important to the
There are a multitude of settings but the most prominent setting takes place in the woods in search of the Appalachian trail. The backdrop of the novel is WWII as the boy navigate through not only different places but through boyhood. One of the main characters is from the plains of Kansas and is sent to Morton Hill Academy in the dull and rainy area of Maine. The boys end up at a variety of houses, occupied and unoccupied. Threw setting and imagery Vanderpool is able to provide theme and imagery when fisher states “I could still hear the water outside, the river rushing all around this place. But this time I also Heard
The Open Boat is a wildly creative text. The author explores fiction and philosophy to achieve a balance of literature professionalism. The text is a masterpiece reality expressed through the creation of characters representatives of society and day to day living. Symbolic use of characters and human titles plays a key role in delivering the message of the author. Stephen Crane, the author exploits the power of harmony to establish a relationship where every individual is a unit within a literally functional setting. The author speaks about significant issues in society; more so, about the events that have affected his life. According to Alison and Mays (247), the characters in “The Open Boat” are vehicles designed to convey concepts about the society’s functionality. They facilitate thematic and plot development to reveal the place of man in society and express nature as being apathetic to man. These ideological concepts are achieved by understanding the elements of society as being mutually dependent. The Correspondent, The Captain, Billie, and The Cook come up as the vital parts of the author`s chosen setting. This crew of sailors is motivated by the desire to survive but lacks adequate knowledge of the geography of the sea; they get through by ensuring that every individual is keen to do their part in the stressful environment.
On his way to school, Bastian hides from some bullies in a bookstore and sneaks off with a book labeled, “The Neverending Story”. Bastian reads it and finds out it’s about a land Fantasia threatened by “The Nothing”. In the book, it describes they need a human boy to help, and as he reads the human boy’s description, it sounds a lot like him and he wonders if the boy is him, the land is real, and he must save it.

In “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane, four men – a captain, an oiler, a correspondent, and a cook - survive a shipwreck. They maneuver the rough waters in a dinghy, searching for land and signs of life. After they accept that the area around a safe-house they come across is unpopulated, the men also accept the fact that there is a very real chance that they may die. This passage delves into the same thoughts that are rushing through all of their heads, but keeping to themselves. In such a situation, all men think about how this could happen, and why. Alas, they do not have an answer, and that frustrates them. Nature cannot be explained, it simply just is. This passage supports reveals the work’s overall meaning or theme of nature’s indifference towards humans with story elements consistent with Naturalist literature such as the adversity that ordinary people may face, uncontrollable forces deciding man’s fate, and man’s will to triumph against that fate.
