A hero is somebody who commits an act of remarkably bravery or who has shown an admirable quality such as great courage or strength of character. To me a hero is someone who is nice, kind, caring, open minded, confident, not afraid to help others and not a quitter.

Epic Heroes, Superheroes, and Personal Heroes are all types of Heroes people in today’s society can connect to.

There are many variations when definitions what is a hero. Some people think of a hero as being someone who is strong, intelligent, attractive, and daring others think of capes and superhuman powers. Typically our perception of a hero changes with maturity and life experiences. Heroes have many different qualities that can be overlooked such as honesty, patience, compassion, and forgiveness. In our modern lives when we think of a hero we think of nurses and soldiers, but according to the American Heritage Dictionary, a hero in mythology and legend is a man or woman, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.

What makes a person a hero? The definition of a hero is “a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength.” Every society has a hero. There are the stereo typical heroes such as Superman and Hercules with supernatural powers and there are other heroes that help our societies, such as firemen, soldiers, or doctors. Two main heroes in ancient Greece are Beowulf and Sir Gawain. Beowulf and Sir Gawain have very similar characteristics; however there styles of heroism and moral codes are very different from each other.

A person who is brave enough to come out of their comfort zone and take risk, someone who never gives up even when things may seem impossible, a clever and creative mind, and to top it all with a heart that only means good; all mold together to make a hero.

Some look at people like Joan of Arc and Charlemagne as heroes, others see super stars and pop artists as heroes. But one can only, truly be a hero if they are selfless, if they are humble, and if they suffer. Take Bilbo Baggins, from J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic novel, The Hobbit, for example. Many would and do not look at him as a hero, but more of a journeyman or burglar. But if you look deeper, you will see that he is indeed a hero.

They don’t have any superpowers or special abilities, but the can reach the heart of others and inspire them with their stories. They grow out of their hardships or help others who have difficulty growing out of their own. Hero’s see everyone as like minded people, instead of focusing on each other’s differences. Three ideas that define a hero are humility, mindset, and selflessness.

When we think of heroes most of us think of movie stars or professional athletes, but it’s not always about your popularity or talent it can also be about how you help society. What I think make a great hero is someone who is able to overcome his or her obstacles in life, is highly motivated, and has plenty of bravery.
