Rihanna’s composition of various scenes in her music video “We Found Love”, explores the destruction of her relationship overtime. She begins the video with scenes based in present-time that exhibit the aftermath of her drug-influenced relationship. Significantly, blemished makeup, distraught body language, artificial lighting, and disheartening non-diegetic sounds create an ominous impression of how the relationship malfunctioned over time. By transferring to flawless costumes, lighthearted body language, and cheerful non-diegetic pop music, Rihanna shifts to a flashback of the relationship’s carefree moments while simultaneously juxtaposing the couple’s current drug-induced devastation with the past memories of the blissful connection that …show more content…
In the beginning of the music video “We Found Love,” Rihanna creates a dejected feeling of agony while establishing the scene in present-time. For example, she composes a shot in which she and her lover lay together in a bathtub as florescent lights strike their faces. This artificial florescent light represents the falsity and hollowness of their affection, and simultaneously, it attributes to the destructive theme of the use of drugs throughout the relationship. In the same scene, their clothes are drenched and water trickles down the surface of their skin. Rihanna’s makeup appears tarnished by the mascara bleeding down her face. This scene shows the couple as very disjointed creatures by manipulating their appearance to seem haunting. Similarly, the non-diegetic sound in this particular scene plays a vital role in setting the mood; Rihanna speaks about a past lover, which furthermore, implies who the man in the bathtub, is. During this scene, Rihanna and the young man do not speak, but rather we hear Rihanna express her emotion through commentary. She places the soft piano strokes within her commentary in order to compel the viewer to sympathize with her anguish. As a whole, this scene in the video exemplifies the heart wrenching emotion that one undergoes during the loss of love due to
The example that represent pathos in the beginning of the music video informs the readers on what the situation may be. The begining scene is of a mother sitting in her bedroom smoking while her daughter, Angela who appears to be the age of 6 or 7, is walking off to school by herself. As she walks alone, she observes another mother hugging her
Rob Sheffield is former radio D. J., as well as an editor and columnist for the Rolling Stones magazine. He stumbled upon a mix tape titled Rumblefish with no songs written on it. At first he referred to it as “just another piece of useless junk that Renee left behind” (Sheffield 643). Renee was his wife whom passed away after they were married for only five years. So as he listens through the tape, he finds himself re-living and relieving the memory of his life with his much loved wife; and each song is related with bittersweet memories. And so he drowns and looses himself into the mix tape.
They costume domestic violence by using beautiful Fox and passionate love making, to turn the violence into something almost resulting from too strong of love. Too many young men and women will find this all provocatively sexy. The video portrays the woman looking beautiful, even while being choked; the man tortured by his rage, longing for love and peace, and believing that if only the woman would behave, then the man would retreat to serenity (Meyers). This however is not the real perception people should be seeing, imagining, or believing. Abuse is not love in any shape or form, but to subjective people who don’t completely analyze the situation, it almost makes it look like in this case domestic violence can be tolerated and justified. This is not the message we should be sending to people in these types of situations or to some who may be faced with them later in life. Domestic violence is already a huge problem in today’s society. This song is not to blame for all of it, but I’m sure it add’s to the numbers involved.

Music videos are often seen as the parts of the song’s story that an artist has trouble putting into words. Sometimes these details are unnoticeable at first glance, while some are essential to giving us vital information on what the song is actually about. Michael Jackson’s famous “Thriller” music video is often viewed as a Halloween binge watching classic, but judging by both the visual and audio components, it may be more than just a crowd of dancing zombies. There are quite a few moments throughout the video that can easily be seen as symbolisms of abuse, stalking, and rape/sex. By viewing the Thriller music video with this thought in mind, I hope to help you see the true evil lurking in the dark.
“Motel 6” is the first track of Jean Deaux’s debut album, Soular System Vol. I: Dark Matter[s]. It describes Deaux’s mental state after being a victim of sexual abuse. The music video, released in October 2014, provides a visual for the gritty depiction of her emotional pain. Deaux’s audience are those who have been raped or affected by sexual assault. Through this music video, she provides an outlet for victims to relate and displays the mental and physical pain of sexual abuse. The music video for “Motel 6” only uses visuals to express a story, an element I would like to attempt to use in my project. Visuals without narration open the interpretation of the art to the audience. This allows discussion to form and creates a more interesting
The abuse of the female character as indicated in the video, is justified by the androcentric theory of biological determinism and its inherent biases; sexism and classism, as she is not only female but she is not Caucasian or wealthy. The music video also portrays that the living arrangements and socioeconomic status of the couple is justified by their race. The couple is of mixed race and is living in a very small, messy council estate and is forced to have to steal and gamble due to their lack of income. The couple also abuses drugs and alcohol. This image plays into the cultural ideology of the inequality between Caucasian and other races. The majority of people in Belfast are Caucasian and the particular couple in “We Found Love’s” music video happen to be non-Caucasian and living in poverty. Biological determinism and racism in “We Found Love” justifies and normalizes the poverty in which the couple lives in as the “natural life” or what an individual’s destiny is, is determined by race and sex. Binary oppositions including “rich” and “poor” come into mind when viewing this music video. This couple, obviously living in poverty are automatically portrayed as alcohol and drug abusers and deemed as “bad” or as “criminals” by society as police car lights are seen in multiple scenes.
Rihanna’s father was abusive, he was addicted to crack, and alcohol, which often left the family broke. He would beat her and her mother daily. She was also afflicted by excruciating headaches. They were so bad that she underwent CT Scans because doctors thought it was a brain tumour, but it was just the intense stress of living at home.
What is the ultimate form of a tragic love? For Wong, it is neither denial nor acceptance, but an eternal state of longing and waiting. Among Wong Kar Wei’s internationally acclaimed productions, Days of Being Wilde (1990), In the Mood for Love (2000), and 2046 (2004) are loosely counted as a trilogy of love. In the end chapter of his trilogy 2046, Wong continues to focus on Chou-Mu-Yun, a sentimental yet callous writer and womanizer. Revolving around the affairs of Chou, 2046 presents to its audience three pathways that love could possibly offer: to unite in happiness, to move on after the denial from the loved one, and to linger upon the unanswered love in perpetuity. Chou is undoubtedly chosen to be the bearer of the last pathway. As the
In Barbara Graham’s “The Future of Love”, she says long-term fairy tale romance inspires true love believers and their perspective towards love itself. Graham expresses the idea that to her, a lot of relationships fail because both partners in the relationship fall in love with an idealistic view of who the other person is. She explains that couples jump into relationships thinking their significant other was this perfect image they made him/her out to be only to come to realization that it was a figment of their imagination. Graham also defies the sappy happy endings that she says everyone believes in since heartbroken romantics oversee a lot of the incompatibilities and faults in a relationship to make it more
“I love you.” These three little words might possibly be the most powerful statement one can make to another person. In life, most yearn for the intimate affection that a certain someone can provide them. Women dream of their Prince Charming to come and sweep them off their feet, while men search for the love of their life that sets their heart on fire. But what happens when love is thrown around without a second thought? Has this four letter word become an overused cliché? Has love been replaced with lust? Is there such a thing as true love? This last question has been asked throughout history, while many have argued and debated over the final answer. We, as a society, have become a loveless, sex crazed group
Love is difficult to define, difficult to measure, and difficult to understand. Love is what great writers write about, great singers sing about, and great philosophers ponder. Love is a powerful emotion, for which there is no wrong definition, for it suits each and every person differently. Whether love is between family, friends, or lovers, it is an overwhelming emotion that can be experienced in many different ways.
I met her two years ago and we did not have much to say at that time. Little did I know that she would later steal my heart and become an intimate part of my life. As the saying goes "there is someone for anyone at any time in this life" and I was about to find out that this saying was so true. I have had a wall built around me and my defense was as a stronghold to protect myself from all the relationships that have come and gone over the years. I thought that I was meant to be alone in this old life and happiness was forever gone from me. This wonderful woman I am speaking of is Mary Doe, and the joy she has given me has revived my hope and faith that I may have finally found love and peace within. She has made me feel like I am a child
Love is an abundant emotion that has different degrees. There is familial love, friendly love, unconditional love, and of course romantic love. Romantic love will be the superstar of this article. Romantic love may be around every corner whether between an old couple or a young teenage romance. However, love is not the easiest thing to attain. It is such a simple concept, though a difficult thing to actually have a person’s hands on.
Having a first love can change your life for the better in so many ways. My first love did that and much more. The best part of it I didn’t expect any of it. The first time I was introduced to her I was working at a place called smoothie king. I remember her walking in she was stunning basically, breath taking. I've never seen anyone as gorgeous as her. When she first walked in the first thing I noticed was her long slick hair and a smile of an angel. Her eyes where amazing as a result I would just get lost in them. The crazy part was I've never felt that way for anyone else. I would just get this pulsing rushing feeling throughout my whole body. If someone could actually give me that feeling I knew they were precious. So, I started to talk to her more and I really felt this strong connection forming between us. The more we hanged out the more my life became great. Just being around her and the things, we did I felt my life heading in a direction that was so perfect. Having that feeling that someone appreciates you was so valuable to me. I started to see myself through someone else's eyes wondering what I could do to be a better person. That’s exactly what I did. I saw myself being more grateful and understanding. There were also things I've always wanted to do in my life but I could never do because I was either unhappy or didn’t have someone to do it with therefore with her I was able to do all of it. She really did change my life for the better and I can't thank her enough.
