Nestled between the rolling hills of North Georgia is the little town of Ringgold, Georgia. This town, although small in size, has had a significant historical impact in the region. It has also started admirable patriotic traditions emulated by cities surrounding the town. From its role in the Civil War to its modern day impact on local culture and tradition, the town of Ringgold has remained a trailblazer for the local area. Ringgold Impacted the Civil War: There are several ways that the little town of Ringgold changed the course of history during the tumultuous time of the Civil War. During the war, Ringgold found itself in the middle of some of the bloodiest battles of the war. As a result, several buildings in the town—some of which are still standing today-- were turned into hospitals for the wounded. Of course, Ringgold hosted more than just the sick and infirmed; it also was center stage for one of the most notable events of the Civil War, the great locomotive chase. However, its emphasis on patriotism has not waned. Each Veteran’s and Memorial Day, there are thousands of flags, sat atop cross markers that are set out throughout town. Each cross has a name of a soldier and their branch of service. Many of them did not die in service, but instead came back home to live in peace the rest of their lives. However, each flag represents a person who has passed on. The site of the thousands of flags draws attention and admiration from the surrounded towns and even other states. The patriotism shown by the town of Ringgold to continue this ever growing tradition is admirable. After all, no citizen is paid to put up or to take down these thousands of flags twice
