Today I was running medical parade at my placement, The Toronto East Detention Centre. Usually most of the inmates I interview during admission assessment deny major needs indicators like homelessness, but today I actually met a man who admitted to being homeless immediately prior to being arrested and incarcerated. Usually, to avoid potential nurse-client friction, my bent is to move on quickly from topics like this if I sense that the inmate is embarrassed and does not want to talk about it. But today I bravely diverged from my usual easy path and decided to put to use and apply what I’ve learned from my learning plan research this semester regarding inmates at risk for homelessness and the programs available to them in the community.
