We all have either witnessed, fell victim, or have engaged in road rage behavior. The definition of road rage is, “aggressive or violent behavior stemming from a driver's uncontrolled anger at the actions of another motorist” (DMV, 1999). I know all too well the frustrations of sitting in traffic for hours. An even I myself am guilty of having some road rage tendencies. There is nothing more frustrating, to me, than to have somebody race to get in front of me, and then stopping. Rather than getting behind me and then stopping. It makes me wonder what is so important, that they had to cut me off. Honestly, some days I question if people really do get their licenses from Cracker Jack Boxes. There are all sorts of horror stories of people becoming physically violent, and even at times fatal, all because of road rage. A majority of road rage cases is caused by; distracted drivers, drivers who have anger issues and drivers with an underlying medical issue.
Distracted driving is the most common reason for road rage. People spend a good amount of time behind the wheel of their

Individuals with certain mental health issues may succumb easily succumb to road rage. They could already be having a stressful time, because of their mental health issue. Then they have to deal with stress from traffic, and they become angry. They are armed with assault weapons on wheels. They start driving aggressively. Next thing they know there is a four car pileup with two fatalities. Sansone & Sansone, authors of “Road Rage” (2010) says “Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an Axis II dysfunction that seems to harbor the relevant prerequisites for road rage” (Sansone & Sansone, 2010). That was just one of several different mental health issues that can contribute to road rage. Although there are so many odds stacked against us, with distracted drivers, aggressive drivers, and medical problems, there may be ways we can reduce road
In chapter 18, there are many different perspectives of freedom from different kinds of people during the 1900's to 1916's. The first group of people that had a view of freedom was the Mexican Americans. When they came to the United States because they knew that this is the land of freedom. There were many Mexican families that have come over to have a better life. One of those families is the Santella family, which was interviewed by Manuel Gamio, who was a sociologist. The Santella family lived in San Antonio and has lived there and who has owned many properties all over the place. Mrs. Santella has expressed her feelings about living in the U.S and that she loves the fact that is free. She loves living here in the U.S.A because he daughters are safe and that they do not have to worry about any dangers like they faced back in Mexico. They finally have a perfect place to live in for the rest of their lives. (Foner,74-76)
Distracted driving is the leading cause of car accidents in America, followed by speeding, then drunk driving. A study performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTAS) found that 80% of car crashes were a direct result of distracted driving. There are three types of distractions for drivers: visual, cognitive, and manual. Cell phone usage whilst driving meets all three criteria for a distracted driver. When a person is using a phone they will take their eyes away from the road to look at the device (visual), they will think about the content of what they are looking at and take their mind off of the road (cognitive), and they will also take their hands off of the wheel to use the device (manual). There are many other reasons that can be attributed to distracted driving, like applying make-up or loud passengers in the car, but cell phone usage is becoming a rapidly growing concern, especially with younger drivers. The NHTAS identified that drivers under the age of 20 make up the highest proportion of distracted drivers that were involved in fatal crashes.
There's many other reasons for road accidents all over accident, like weather accidents, lack of driving skills from people, etc.. But texting and driving has been another major issue for everyone on the road. I even once knew someone
“ Distracted driving kills” ( Distracted driving7). Distracted driving affects people of all ages but, “ our youngest and most inexperienced drivers are most at risk” ( Distracted driving7). This happens as soon as a person enters their vehicle and start to drive. Their eyes begin to go off the road which soon causes a head to head collision. Later on as technology improves and advances, cell phones have become the most common type of distracted driving such as eating or drinking or watching videos on their phone for an example, “ because text messaging requires visual, manual and conductive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarm distraction” (Distracted driving 5). This shows that many are risking their life and others around
When it comes to the topic of distracted driving most of us will readily agree that distracted driving isn’t violence. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of whether or not distracted driving is violence. Where some are convinced that they are, other maintain that they are not. Technology is the most distracting item out on the streets, highway, parkway, etc. The Florida state made a law saying while texting and driving you will get a ticket, because they consider that as dangerous, or talking on the phone. Your eyes should be on the road at all times so you wouldn’t hurt anybody. Read more to figure out if distracted driving is violent or not.
Southern California traffic can be very frustrating. I drive the freeway almost every day and the aggressiveness of other drivers has often left me feeling very angry. I can vividly remember a few months ago another driver was riding on my bumper, flashing his high beams, honking his horn. He then pulled in front of me, stopped his car, and got out of his car to confront me. While I decided not to jump out and escalate the confrontation, instead just changing lanes and leaving him standing in the fast lane, I found myself ruminating over the whole situation. I was able to stuff my anger holding myself back from doing what I really wanted to do, which was to jump out of my vehicle and get in his face. As I drove down the freeway I played
WARNING!! There is currently a dangerous epidemic outbreak of accidents caused by distracted driving all across the United States. Many believe that this outbreak only affects teenagers. Although, according to The Texas Department of Transportation in 2015 there has been over 105,000 of these accidents deals with teenagers and adults as the driver due to distracted driving. Safe driving is described as a complex procedure that requires 100 percent of focus and concentration. While, distractive driving is defined as any time the driver takes their eyes off the road for even a split second due to any distraction. These distractions can range from eating to using any electronic device and even talking to others inside and outside the car. There are countless of cases after cases about drivers being distracted and getting into fatal car
Distracted driving is a major problem on the roads today. Not only is distracted driving dangerous for the driver himself but also for other people who happen to be on the same roads as them. The Annual AAA Foundation traffic safety culture index reports that 81.1% of drivers believe distraction is a serious problem and is a behavior that makes them feel unsafe
Distracted driving has been the most recent cause of accidents on the road presently. Of course there are many other reasons why drivers get into accidents, but it is mainly because they get distracted. Police in El Cerrito, California even gave more than 600 citations in April to drivers for distracted driving violations (“El Cerrito”).Also,“nearly 6,000 people were killed and a half-million injured last year in the U.S. due to drivers being distracted”(“Distracted”).Distracted driving today causes many accidents through the use of technology, eating and drinking, and children in the backseat.
Road rage can be displayed using your vehicle by tailgating, cutting other drivers off, speeding, or by using hand gestures or using profanities. I possess road rage frequently. I usually speed past other drivers going well past the speed limit. If I am stopped at an intersection and the driver behind blows on their horn or tailgates me when the traffic light has just changed from red to green, I will spin my tires until a large cloud of white smoke engulfs their vehicle and causes them to lose visibility and they are forced to wait longer to go through the intersection. Distracted driving is a more common issue with all of the technology and gadgets that are available to us these days. Driving distracted can be classified as eating, texting, checking emails, reading, singing, changing radio stations, taking a selfie, snap chatting, changing a child's diaper, spanking a child, or applying makeup while driving. I tend to refrain from distracted driving. However, one of my friends was speeding on Highway 90 just outside of Rayne and he was adjusting his bass knob on his subwoofer while not paying attention to the
One thought that may come to mind is, “I can beat that guy” or “I am not letting him pass me.” This in theory is a start to Road Rage. You have just initiated a step of Road Rage that not only puts yourself in danger, but others as well. Following other driver’s actions is a primitive motive to enact in Road Rage. Whether it be, as stated above following another driver by speeding or potential racing to taking shortcuts, that speed up your driving process or taking the bike lane to get an edge and quicker route to your primary destination. Dr. Leon James and Dr. Diane Nahl say that, “One factor in road rage is our tendency to concentrate on ourselves while dismissing the communal aspect of driving. It's very easy to perceive another driver's actions in terms of how it affects us, which in turn makes it easy to transition into anger.” (Dr. L. James, Dr. D. Nahl, 2007, p.2) All of this is a cause of Road Rage which can easily be prevented. By simply following the standard traffic laws, such as staying away from a vehicle at a certain distance, or simply leaving earlier to arrive at your destination on time, knowing traffic might be a little crazier than normal. By not following these laws and doing as stated above, you can increase the amount of accidents, anger and also fear in yourself or other drivers. Imagine that on your way to that business meeting or dropping your kids off at school, you forget your daily morning coffee, so you runback inside and rush back out to your car. You are set to go when all of a sudden you back out of the driveway not realizing your surroundings due to being rushed because of the time. This is a prime example of many things that can lead to an accident. Right within your house limits. Most accidents will occur within a radius of 5 miles from your household. Although due to the higher speeds, an accident that
The first article I looked at was “Driving Anger and Traffic Violations: Gender Differences by Gonzalez-Iglesias et al., (2012). This article gives us information on drivers various ages and the reasons in which why men were more likely to get into car accidents than women. The researchers conducted a qualitative survey in Spain on a sample of 541 drivers that was 53.9% females and 46.1% males who were aged 20-73 years old and all respondents had a driver’s license for at least two years prior to this study. This article was helpful to my research because it was very specific in how many people they had surveyed and both genders were almost equally surveyed. It was also helpful to my research because it did not just look at young drivers, it looked at older drivers as well, so that we have more knowledge of various drivers in general considering it is not only younger drivers who get into automobile accidents. This article also contributes to my research because it gives
Distracting driving is a common occurrence with modern day drivers. Due to technological advances making electronics so easy to use on the go, many find themselves spending more time looking at their cell phone or navigation system than they do looking at the road. According to the NHTSA, distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,477 people in 2015 alone. Texting and driving is a common distraction, especially when it comes to the younger generation of drivers. Young drivers are oblivious to the dangers of what seems like such a harmless act. Studies have shown that one 1 in 4 accidents are caused by texting and driving. The number of people injured from distracted drivers in 2015 was 391,000. Over half of the nation’s car accidents are a result of texting and driving. Whereas drinking and driving may kill more people, the leading cause of car accidents is in fact texting and driving.
Thesis:Road rage is a major problem in the United States, it causes accidents, anger, fear, and danger to our roadways everyday.
One type of driver is the new driver. New drivers tend to drive very cautiously; they are always going the exact speed limit, sometimes breaking prematurely. New drivers are so inexperienced that they let their fears overcome and keep them from relaxing. When new drivers become relaxed and comfortable with driving is when they tend to become a threat to their selves and other drivers or pedestrians. They will start the distraction process while driving, such as blaring loud music, texting, taking selfies, and whatever juggling act people do these days. Ever since cell phones became popular the death
