Road to the American Revolution
The 1760's and 1770's were known to be very crucial and important times. The events which occurred during that time made us who we are as a country and a government today. In the year of 1764 the British government had passed a new rule for the Colonists, which was the Sugar Act. The Sugar Act taxed the colonists when they wanted to buy sugar, coffee, wine, etc. The colonists were not happy. A very saddening event took place 1770, called the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre was between a mob of Patriots, throwing snowballs, stones, and sticks, to a squad of British soldiers. On that day, several colonists were killed. An event called the Boston Tea Party took place in 1773, when the colonists did not

This act was an extension of the Molasses Act (1733), which was set to expire in 1763. The Sugar Act was created by Great Britain to help deal with the financial outcome of the Seven Year War. The British had won the war but the cost of their victory had left them in huge debt. They had to figure out some way to pay off the debt, so they taxed colonists on sugar, coffee, wine, indigo, etc. The British government did not ask permission from the colonists to do this. Most Colonists were angry that the British Government took this into action without permission. The colonists didn't like that they were being controlled by the British. England did not care how the colonists felt about the Sugar Act because England had to pay off their debt from the war. The Sugar Act was very intense, because most colonists could not afford to be taxed on these necessities. Most colonists would smuggle these items, due to the taxation. The Sugar Act of 1764 was not a good part of the road to the American Revolution, but it was a very important event, which lead the even more terrible events, like the Boston …show more content…
The Boston Massacre was a street fight between a Patriot mob, and the British soldiers. On that day a British soldier was standing guard and had gotten into a fight with a colonist. A group of colonists was talking about the British and was mad about all the taxes. The colonists were walking when they came across a british soldier. The colonists were mad at the british, so they started to mess with the soldier. The colonists started to call the soldier names and started to throw snowballs, stones, and sticks at the soldier. The soldier called more british soldiers over, and the colonists got even angrier. One of the other soldiers shot the colonists and the other men heard the shot and thought they were commanded to shoot. The soldiers shot into the crowd and ended up with 5 dead colonists. The soldiers went to trial and some people argued that the soldiers were acting in self defense while others argued that it was murder. The troops were found not guilty in the end. The Boston Massacre was a awful situation because 5 colonists ended up being killed. The colonists grew even more angry, the British were requiring them to pay more, and then the British kill 5 of their own. The colonists were fed up, and had to do something about the British and their rules over America, which lead to the Boston Tea
Between 1770 and 1776, resistance to imperial change turned into a full-on revolution. The American Revolution, also known as the Revolutionary War, was a time of revolting and political uprising, in which the 13 colonies separated from the British Empire, forming the independent nation known as the United States of America. Though the American Revolution began because the colonies wanted independence from Britain, many important historical events and revolts also lead to the tensions and resistance to what resulted in freedom and independence for the colonies from British rule. Events such as the Stamp and Sugar Acts, the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Intolerable Acts, and the Continental Congress led to expanding tensions and soon to the outbreak of the American Revolution.
The Sugar Act also known as the American Revenue Act of 1764 was one of the things leading up to and help cause the American Revolutionary war. The Sugar Act was established on April 5, 1764. This act was established so the colonists would help pay for the national debt and to help pay for the British troops in the colonies to protect them from any further attacks.
After the French and Indian war ended in 1763, England was in a huge debt. To pay off this debt they had to find a source of income. For the colonist that was bad because it just so happens that they were that source of income. The colonist had to pay unfair taxes and one of the unfair taxes was the Sugar Act. In April of 1764, Prime Minister George Grenville proposed and established the Sugar Act.
The Sugar Act was established in 1764. The Sugar Act forced colonists to pay taxes imports from different countries. This law was passed by the Great British Parliament through King George III. Previously, there was a Molasses Act that had colonists pay taxes on only molasses. But, then the parliament establishes the Sugar Act because the Molasses Act was about to expire.
On March 5, 1770, five English colonists were killed in Boston, Massachusetts, by British soldiers. This day will forever be known as the Boston Massacre. It all started with a British sentry who was stationed in Boston. The sentry faced verbal harassment from colonists in the town. Eventually, the group grew larger, and the British sentry called in eight additional soldiers for backup. The large mob of colonists began to physically attack the colonists with clubs and other weapons, leading to the British soldiers to fire on the colonists. The colonists were to blame for the events that occurred on March 5, 1770, because they verbally tormented the British, threatened them with weapons and largely outnumbered the British soldiers.
The Boston Massacre of 1770 was fated to happen once Parliament passed the Townshend Acts of 1767 on the American colonies. These acts placed taxes on goods such as glass, tea, and paper. When these taxes reached throughout the colonies, colonists began to boycott British items, and some of them rioted. Things were getting out of control, so in the following year, Parliament sent soldiers over to the Americas to suppress it. The presence of British troops only served as another factor in
The Boston Massacre, known as the Incident on King Street by the British happened on March 5 1770. A squad of British soldiers were being attacked by a mob. One of the soldiers fired, which caused others to fire. Over all five died all colonists. The event greatly boosted the revolution.
The Boston Massacre took place after British soldiers were antagonized and became fed up. The soldiers opened fire and in the end eleven men were hit and five of them died. This stoked the flames of fury in the British colonies. One colonist said, “The fatal fifth of March, 1770, can never be forgotten. The horrors of that fateful night are but too deeply impressed on our hearts” (Document 6-2). People could not accept this terrible treatment from Britain any longer. Colonists took the opportunity to protest when news of the Tea Tax spread throughout the colonies. It was seen as “an insidious plot to trick Americans into buying the duties tea” (Roark 142). On the last day to pay the duties for British tea, around 150 men dressed as indigenous people dumped every last ounce of tea into the Boston Harbor. It was a political demonstration that showed the British that their taxes would not be tolerated. The protestors “rowed them [the boats] into those parts of the harbor wherever the tea was visible, and by beating it with oars and paddles, so thoroughly drenched it, as to render its entire destruction inevitable…” (Document 6-3). The goal to make a point was successful, but it came with intense repercussion, which the colonists also rebelled against. In summary, tensions between the British and their colonists were caused by Britain’s unsavory actions, primarily
The Boston Massacre was a result of the colonists behavior towards the British militia, they started the entire thing by provoking and taunting the soldiers. On that night colonists surrounded the sentry that was guarding the Custom House, and according to Captain Thomas Preston they cursed and threatened his troops, they also dared them to fire their bayonets.
To begin the day colonists by the name of Edward Archbald, William Merchant, Francis Archbald, and John Leech Jr., came down cornhill together. They separated at Doctor Loring’s corner. Archbald and Merchant walked down a narrow path where in a clearing they saw British soldiers with guns and sticks harassing a young man. When one of the colonists spoke up “Be careful with that gun man.” they were beaten. Leading up to the Boston Massacre was a series of events/arguments between the colonists and British Soldiers, being that
The Boston Massacre was an event that took place in the very early history of the United States. Actually, it occurred during the colonial period, while this country was still under British rule. The event occurred on March 5, 1770, when a group of American colonists had a disagreement with British soldiers who were standing guard at a building. The colonists were staging a protest against tax measures they considered unfair. The unfair taxation had become oppressive, and the colonists felt they must do something to try to change this policy of the British government. Tempers heated up, and the colonists began to hurl profanities at the soldiers and to throw objects at them. They were basically picking a fight. The soldiers may have felt
