Cormier’s book displays the problem of innocence being taken advantage of by evil in the world. The way he demonstrates this is by showing acts of peer pressure particularly in the teenage years, and how this peer pressure can make an good individual into much a much worse individual. The novel shows this by including The Vigils in the story, which were a clique at Trinity who basically ran the school.
