Many People know Robert E. Lee as the leader of the Confederate Army during the Civil War, but there is more to him then that. Robert Edward Lee, was born in Virginia, January 19, 1807 (Robert E. Lee,1).Lee was born the fourth child of Colonel Henry Lee and Ann Hill Carter. Lee's father, also known as "Light-Horse Harry," had been a cavalry leader during the Revolutionary War. When Lee left Appomattox he started a new adventure away from the soldier's life in the field and to Lexington. His leadership skills ended up benefiting him as he became president of a small college. On April 15th, when he returned to his family in Richmond he lived in a city frantically rebuilding itself. After a couple of months he and his family ended up moving to Derwent, into a house owned by Elizabeth Randolph Cocke. This was west of Richmond and away from the city. Lee enjoyed the country and contemplated living out the rest of his life buying land and becoming a farmer. He had no desire to leave Virginia. Lee said, "I cannot desert my native state in the hour of her adversity," he remarked to a friend. "I must abide her fortune, and share her fate." Although this was his plan it did not last long. Washington College in Lexington wanted him as president. They felt he was perfect choice since he was superintendent at West Point and was also had a very recognizable name. After talking it over with family and friends he accepted their offer and went on to new thing at Lexington. Lee ended up arriving in mid September of 1865 and went to work immediately. Lee’s life, he accomplished alot. He was a very successful leader and role model. His name is still well known and although he was the commander of the Confederate Army, he is still really respected. With all his hard work throughout his life, working in the military, working at West Point and being leader and commander of the Confederate Army, he did a lot in his life. Robert E. Lee was a man of family, culture and tradition. Lee was a man who believed in the old English ways in chivalry. The Southern states fought for the same ideals that Lee stood for. Lee believed that this way of life made men to be of a higher class. He was convinced that these old values can build a better nation. Catton express the Confederacy loyalty to these values by saying: “For four years, the southern states had fought a separate war to up held the ideals for which Lee; as if he himself was the Confederacy… the best thing that the way of life for which the Confederacy stood could have ever had to offer” (410).

The two generals led very different lives: Grant came from a religious, hard working, and relatively poor background, Lee was from an honorable family with a respectable amount of money. The two generals studied in the United States Military Academy in West Point, but with very different intentions; Grant did not have any interest on becoming a soldier, but was forced by his father to enter the school and Lee had every intention on becoming a condecorated soldier. One of the four “greatest Americans” was none other than Robert E. Lee. His picture hung in President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s office. A New York dentist told Eisenhower that Lee helped the United States Government. Lee was a heroic role model to the nation that he has shown when he went to the war. Lee is a bit complicated, but he was extraordinary in what he does. Lee was there to serve the south and protect them. He made sure that they were safe and that the Union would not get in the way of that. His maneuvers were even better.
The focus of this investigation will be, “To what extent was Robert E. Lee an effective leader of the Confederate Army?” The investigation will analyze Lee’s strengths and weaknesses that contributed to his effectiveness and the overall loss of the Confederacy in the Civil War. The overall character of Lee throughout his lifetime is too broad, therefore, this investigation will focus solely on the testimony of his military background, and the personality traits that led to Lee’s decisions during the Civil War. As a result, Lee the American by Gamaliel Bradford Jr. and Robert E. Lee: The Soldier by Sir F. Maurice are important sources to this investigation, due to the background they give on Lee’s military training, personality, and victories in the battles leading up to Gettysburg.

At eighteen he attended West Point MIlitary Academy, where he excelled in artillery, infantry and cavalry. He began courting Mary Curtis who is a member of the Virginia’s aristocracy. After getting Mr. Curtis’s approval they get married and have seven children together.

Serving several military positions in Georgia, Virginia, New York, Texas, and Mexico. Over the next 23 years, his reputation as a strong military leader increased in recognition and respectability, and in 1852 he was named superintendent of West Point. From February of 1860 until February of 1861, for one whole year,, Lee commanded the Department of Texas -- the largest number of troops he had ever commanded. Lee had to evaluate his position as a Whig devoted to the Union and as a Virginian. At this point, he did not agree with the political and economic arguments for Southern independence. Though, unfortunate as the choice was, if pressed to choose between fighting for Virginia or for the Union, Lee realized the decision would be simple. Lee's loyalties proved to be on the side of the South because of his family tradition in and association with the state of Virginia.
