Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful Essay

The Holocaust, one of the worst genocides in history, a time that every person should know and understand, the mass murder of Jews over 5 years of pain and suffering. The best way to teach this in my opinion is with the Elie Wiesel interview Death Camp Auschwitz and to show it when middle schoolers are young, but old enough to have an idea of what happened from 1939 to 1945, but the middle schoolers can't watch this without losing important information not given in the video. So there is a reason why the middle schoolers should see this over reading books and online stories, and how they will keep wanting to listen to what else is missing from the picture. But there will be some forms of information lost when the middle schoolers watch this over the books and such. So what gives this interview video an advantage over books.

The Holocaust was a distressing time in history and is not a story everyone can absorb. Both the book, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas written by John Boyne and the film, Life is Beautiful, directed by Robert Benigni, are based upon the real life events of the Holocaust but with a difference. They made clever use of different techniques to dim and censor the reality of the events and interpret it in a more tolerable way. This book was effective and achieved the purpose of describing the Holocaust in a personal and relative manner. I do not think anyone who reads this book does not finish it with a better understanding of what the victims of concentration camps experienced. This book

There were about 500,000 living survivors of the Holocaust in 2014. It is vital for students to be taught about the Holocaust in school. The article, "combating" shows that the students need to be aware that the event did in fact happen. The article "Genocide" shows students what happens when hate against one group or culture becomes too much. Elie Wiesel's Night shows students an eyewitness account of how much violence, brutality, and abuse to the prisoners had to go through in the Holocaust. Though some people are against the subject of the Holocaust because it is too graphic or mature for the students, it is important that students learn from a trusted adult instead of letting other students try to teach it to themselves. The students should learn about the subject of the Holocaust in school because it teaches the importance of equality, about the events occurrence, and teaching about the dangers of discrimination and abuse.

The Holocaust was a very important tragic event that occurred in history. Many of the stories belonging to the jews were lost and never told, many of the innocent souls were unknown, but never forgotten. For years, people have tried to dig up these stories and explain it to many generations, because the Holocaust wasn't something to be forgotten about or left unknown. Sometimes it is hard to understand the truth without a visual. Movies such as Schindler’s list or books such as Maus try to give a message as well as a visual to better understand the content.

Overall, the film did exactly what any good dramatic film would do and that is make the audience feel something. The tragedy of the Holocaust has never been fictionally depicted from a German child’s view until this movie. The depiction of how a child who is protected from certain elements war might have thought in that era makes this film unique. The unbelievable conclusion is what makes this film unforgettable. Life can be very beautiful. In contrast, life for many people during World War 2 was not so beautiful. During this time, the world was at war. Gladly, during all the madness, in 1945 innocent people broke free, and concentration camps were liberated. The film Life is Beautiful, Guido demonstrated the three qualities; Inherent thoughtfulness and emotionality, expressive coherence, and wholeness and unity.

In Elie’s story, it mostly focuses on his view and what is happening just to him. “During the alert, I had followed the mob, not taking care of him. I knew he was running out of strength, so close to death, and yet I had abandoned him.” (page 106) said Elie. Elie started to only think about himself and not his loved ones. While Life is Beautiful shows what happens to all of the characters. Elie’s story begins very close to the beginning of the Holocaust, Guido’s story before the Holocaust takes up half of the movie.

When people look at two extremely different stories such as Night and Life is Beautiful, they would not expect there to be many similarities. However, these two devastating tales are more alike than suspected. Both Night and Life is Beautiful may be two accounts of the holocaust, but that does not mean that they bring the same thing to the table. They both may include a somewhat similar father-son relationship, yet they still aren’t that same. Night, a tragic memoir of Eliezer Wiesel, and Life is Beautiful, a humorous and still somewhat depressing movie of Guido and his family, have numerous similarities as well as drastic differences between them.

I enjoyed the fact that the setting of the story is different unlike other movies. Instead of it being fixated on the lives of the Jews living in concentration camps or the ghettos, there setting takes place outside in the forest where they have to take on even more problems and adapt themselves to nature’s environment. The Jews had to start from the bottom, but eventually they created an efficient and resilient community. They were forced to build shelters out of material such as wood and tree stems found in the forest. The refugees organized leadership roles by the various skills of the Jews. Most were skilled craftsmen, artisans, and laborers, but soon became fighters and soldiers, gun cleaners, and shoemakers. Women were deemed the task of preparing the meals, and keeping up with the children. They also had the impossible task of having to find weapons and ammunition to survive.

Life is Beautiful (1997), an Italian comedic drama set in 1939, tells the tale of Guido, a young Jewish man living during the time of World War II, the film follows Guido and his family; from when they were happy living freely to when they are forced to work unfairly in concentration camps. Directed by Roberto Benigni, also known for Pinocchio (2002), Life is Beautiful portrays many important themes and messages to the audience. Benigni shows the importance of bravery in the film, through cinematic techniques including camera angles, lighting, and sound.

Many elements of the film Life is Beautiful can compare to the Bible. For example, Guido, the main character, acts as a Christ figure in that he saves his son, Joshua from the evils of the Holocaust. Another example that compares with the Bible is the tank that is promised to Joshua. Finally, Guido’s death eventually saves Joshua from his own death. Such examples in the movie are comparable to examples in the Bible.

I have seen documentary about he concentration camp but have never actually visited the place where all of this horrible event happened. I bet when you saw the place you understood what the victims of this tragic been through. The camp probably look depression because many people lost their lives and family member. When you saw the concentration camp, did everyone you heard and learned about that event became a reality to you? You are luck to see that with your own eyes.
