Starved Rock Park is a beautiful, marvel that lies along the Illinois River just 90 miles West of Chicago. The park was named after a battle that took place in 1760 that involved the Ottawa Indian tribe. When the battle broke out among opposing tribes the Ottawa Indians were forced to take refuge on a giant rock. Several days after the battle, the tribe began to run out of resources and eventually starved to death, giving the rock and the park its name. The rich history of the area began in 8000 BC when the Archaic tribe first settled there. From then on tribes such as the Woodland, Hopewellian, and Mississippi have also inhabited the area. After the 1760 battle, however, Indian activity at Starved Rock Park declined leaving the area

Smith Rock State Park is awesome. It is located near my home in Central Oregon. It is a frequent place for locals and visitors from all over the world. The spectacular spires and walls are carved out of 30-million-year-old welded tuff and rhyolite rocks that formed from the ash explosions and lava flows of an eruptive volcano. Geologists have identified a 230-square mile depression, called a caldera, that is all that is left of this ancient volcano. A caldera is a giant crater that forms when a magma chamber beneath a volcano erupts a large volume of material. The top of the volcano literally collapses into the newly emptied chamber, creating a huge depression. Smith Rock State Park is on the northwest corner of what is now known as

As a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) there may come a time when we are treating patients who are approaching end of life. As a medical professional, it is important to understand the issues and personal bias surrounding death and dying in order to provide quality care for patients and their families. As medical technology evolves we are given the ability to expand the lifespan and cure diseases that otherwise would have been death sentences. However, it is important to realize that an extended lifespan does not always correlate with improved quality of life (QOL). Each patient and their family will weigh QOL and potential outcomes differently. What may be arduous to one patient or family may not be to another. Therefore, it is important to consider each patient on a case by case basis being sensitive to individual beliefs, preferences, and priorities.
