After reading both opinions from Roger Ebert and Marsha Sinkevich concerning Beowulf, I believe that I agree with certain parts of both arguments. However, if I had to choose a side, I would pick Sinkevich’s point of view. When I watched the movie, there were definitely scenes that contained more humor, but I wouldn’t call the film a comedy. Overall I agree with Sinkevich when she states, “I found the film moving, dynamic, and even with the blood and guts, very poetic and sad.” The movie itself brought many of the characters to live for me. I was able to get a better picture in my head as opposed to imagining it for myself while reading the text. I could see the fear and pain on the faces of the animated characters which magnified the meaning …show more content…
I found the cyclical love affairs between the kings and Grendel’s mother brilliant because it flowed perfectly with the storyline. It also explains where all of these monsters are coming from. However, I also believe that it changes some of the messages of the story. Technically, when both the previous king and Beowulf succumb to Grendel’s mother, they commit adultery. The result are these hideous, murderous monsters born to punish these rulers as they see their people suffer and die. This is where I tend to split off in my agreement with Ebert and turn towards Sinkevich’s review. It is sad and the film is most definitely trying to convey a message; this message is that adultery is a terrible sin that can lead to further chaos, tearing people’s lives apart. Sure it was funny when Beowulf fought Grendel naked, and even more so when I recognized Grendel’s mother to be Angelina Jolie, but the when you look deeper into the purpose of this story, it isn’t comical. Furthermore, just when the audience thinks the vicious cycle is over, Beowulf’s friend and the new king is about to be lured into the monster mother’s clutches too. I don’t find this ending funny at all, but rather stressful. The cycle starts up again, leaving these helpless people to suffer again in the near
In my opinion, I had the thought of Beowulf being a very boring literature story that I was forced to read because I’m a senior. But overall I enjoyed the poem. Yes it was kind of hard to read and comprehend due to the Anglo-Saxon literature. As far as the movie ‘13th Warrior” I really enjoyed because I’m such a visual learner. Even though the movie was somewhat different in names and kind of out of order I was still able to understand and point out the different events from the poem. So due to this watching this movie really enhanced my knowledge about
Beowulf is one hell of an adventure. Slaying demons and dragons and even evil dark queens. But the movie compared to the epic is very different. In the movie, instead of Grendel attacking at night, he attacked while people had been awake just to add more adventure in the movie, but also, Beowulf is not entirely honest in the movie like he is in the epic. An example of this shows when he is slaying Grendel, he takes off all of his armor and clothes to give this naked, weaponless demon a fighting chance. Yes, Beowulf put up an intense fight with his demon to kill him, but Beowulf ended up killing him with the door of the room and taking the demon’s arm off with it. This is considered using a weapon, but making Beowulf kill the demon with the door gave him a chance to add more of the adventure to the story when he gives his “I am Beowulf” speech to the demon while the demon’s arm is in the door, defenseless. Also, in the movie they add pathos to the story line by showing after Beowulf left the island to go back to Geatsland, Hrothgar kills himself instead of just
The things to expect from the Beowulf poem are Germanic warriors, heroes in the making, and mystical adventures but what to expect from the movie? The Beowulf poem was a Anglo Saxon poem writing around the 8th-11th century, but was told since the Anglo Saxon time period from 450 CE till now. It was about a Germanic warrior fighting for bravery, honor, and glory in battle.Although the poem and the movie share many similarities, the different portrayals of Grendel, Beowulf, and Grendel’s mother reveal the values of the societies in which they are told.
The movie Beowulf can be viewed in many different lights- satirical, sad, beautiful, and some may even dare to say, complete garbage. Renowned, American film critic, Roger Ebert wrote a comical review for the movie and Marsha Sinkevich wrote a pointed response to his viewpoint. Ebert believes the movie adaptation of the poem is strictly satirical, ment for laughter, and should be taken for nothing else but pure enjoyment. Sinkevich wrote a response to to Ebert’s review stating that she believed the movie was, “storytelling at its best.” Personally, I agree more with Ebert. I don’t think the film did any justice to the epic poem, Beowulf, and should be seen as a comedy.
Novelist and scholar J.R.R. Tolkien’s disputed against Friedrich Klaeber’s allegations that “Beowulf lack’s steady advance” by declaring that “the poem was not meant to advance, steadily or unsteadily. It is essentially a balance, and opposition of ends and beginnings.” Based on both of their opinions, it seems that they disagree on the poem Beowulf. Although they both have opposing opinions it seems that they analyzed it differently. Klaeber’s thought it was lacking the potential it could’ve had if it had all the components of what a great poem should be. Tolkien disagrees that it might not have all the things it must have, but it has everything it needs to be a great story.
The problems these flaws caused Beowulf eventually lead to his demise, as the product of Beowulf's affair with Grendel’s mother is the dragon he is tasked to slay. This is another creative liberty they film writers took with the story. The changes seen between the two tales
Beowulf is a great way for people that are going through a tough time to learn how to stay strong. There are people who get bullied or who have hard backgrounds. This book may be different from what they are experiencing, but there are many great morals in Beowulf. Beowulf has flaws, like his bad eyes, but he sets a goal for himself to see where others only look. Using his self confidence and by surrounding himself with all the good around him, he overcomes Grendel and the She monster, who represent the hard times that people go
In an enchanting kingdom, filled with creatures of all kinds, your friends and family, who fight for their life, and protect their people. Both the movie and poem beowulf is considered a mighty king who goes out and slays the monsters. He even traveled across the sea to hrothgar’s kingdom to defeat grendel, a flesh eating monster. But after several years of fighting monsters the king finally dies, and this is where the similarities and differences take place.
Beowulf is portrayed as a hero-figure, though a less-than-ideal leader, since his warrior-like tendencies and habits follow him. Conversely, the movie Beowulf portrays our hero as more of an anti-hero. By its very nature, Beowulf is an epic hero, but I do not think that the movie does not portray him as such a hero compared to the original translation, because it has an entirely different storyline. If anything, the movie portrays Beowulf as a weak person, easily swooned by the beauty of Grendel’s mother. The movie and the book differ in several key ways, including his relationship with the kingdom and his villains. Even though the general plot is the same, when you really take a deep look at the differences, Beowulf’s movie ceases to be a version of Beowulf anymore, but rather an entirely new story about the same person.
Beowulf is about a man who comes to Denmark because word made it to him that a terrible monster had been slaying men at night for 12 years. He sails over there, obliterates a monster, kills the monster's mother in an underwater building, becomes king, and slays a dragon 50 years later, which in turn ends up killing him as well. Although both the animation and the book follow this basic storyline, they do have their differences such as in the animation, Beowulf uses a sword to defeat grendel rather than just beating him to death like in the book. The book and the animation are pretty similar, but they do have countless minor differences.
Beowulf is the oldest known poem that was forgotten for thousands of years until it was rediscovered and made popular by J.R.R Tolkien in 1939. In the poem, Beowulf is conveyed as a courageous and valiant hero who is faultless. While in the movie he is portrayed as a hero who is flawed and has an inclination for women. Beowulf the movie is distinct from the poem because it emphasizes on the roles played by women such as Grendel’s mother and Wealhtheow; the movie also paints Beowulf in a more humanly portrayal.
In the poem there is no sign that Beowulf is deceitful with lies; however, the film uses his “lie” in order to advance the plot. These differences in the film accentuate human flaw and give the characters a more realistic appeal for today’s audience. In truth, the poem delineates the main character’s
There are many, many differences between the writings of Beowulf and the theatrical interpretation of Beowulf. Included in the differences between the poem and the movie is the scenery around Grendel’s mother’s cave. In the poem the cave is protected by sea monsters and Beowulf slayed a monster to gain entry and the other sea monsters are scared off with the trumpets of Thane. In the movie the entrance to the cave is deserted and Beowulf carefully enters the cave with ease. The huge difference between the poem and the movie completely changes the outcome and moral of Beowulf. In the movie there is no forewarning of life’s delicate state by Hrothgar and much of the moral that Beowulf learns is lost within the way the movie focuses on Grendel’s mother’s beauty rather than her
The mental image created by his description is truly frightening. The book emphasizes Beowulf’s power and strength in his ability to stop the beast. The movie doesn’t give Beowulf the credit he deserves and doesn't accurately show his prowess. The legendary poem of Beowulf and The Geats has remained a thriving work in literature.
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
