The second principle of Rogers is that therapist provides the client with unconditional positive regard. The relationship between a therapist and their patient is vital when applying Rogers second principle. Unconditional positive regards are how the therapist show that they accept who their patients are. This doesn't mean that the therapist has to agree with the patient, but it does mean they have to show the client that they will always appreciate and accept who they are (). Because the patient feels that their therapist accepts them no matter what is said or done, they are willing to let go all boundaries and release their truth. The song that is playing over the video has lyrics that say "wave me good-by wish me well." These words can be
Richard Rogers was born June 28, 1902 in Long Island, New York. His father was a successful physician and his mother was an amateur musician. In Roger’s childhood, he heard music most everyday and was regularly taken to the theatre. When Roger’s was six he could play the piano by ear. He enjoyed listening to small operas, which are also known as operettas. Later, Rogers was inspired by Jerome Kern’s musicals.
Will Rogers is honored in Oklahoma because he was a humorous person who did newspaper columns, radio shows, was an Indian and cowboy, and he helped raise awareness for the rights and needs of Native Americans Indians. He was a caring person who wanted the best for everyone. Rogers did a lot to make some of these things happen. He always wanted to be the person who was always helping. Also he was a person who people were confused about because he was a cowboy and an Indian, but he wanted to show people that you could be both.
What can I take away from the experience of observing this video that will help me build knowledge and Self-Awareness in Therapeutic Communication?
Rogers like Maslow used the ideas of Albert Einstein when it came to creating his theory of self actualization. In his belief a person who has reached self actualization is very centered and feels at ease in social and non social situations alike. In his thoughts the road to fulfillment was just as important as actually becoming fulfilled, and that each of these was define by the experiences they had. Through his use of patients who were already seeking therapy, he was able to concentrate more on the functioning of the individual rather than the dysfunction of the individual itself. Unconditional positive regard is something that was coined by Rogers to describe support or love that is given from one person to another with no strings attached so to speak. He focused this belief on the love between a parent and a child by believing that the correction of a child’s behavior does not have to come at the cost of a parents love.
Gloria said to Mr. Rogers “some many conflicts come in, is this natural?” quickly Dr. Rogers response “in fact it is, but your saying too you know perfectly well a feeling in your self occurs when your doing something that’s right for you? ” , (clip 4, minute 6:28). Form observing this discussion it seems to me like he is validating her feelings and telling her it is natural to feel the way she is feeling. I think Dr. Rogers normalizing this experience for Ms. Gloria shows evidence of respect and non-possessiveness because he is helping her feel at ease with herself yet he is still inquiring in efforts to understand her concerns more indepthly.
Rogers used the symbolism of concept of self, being like a plant given water, soil, sun, and fertilizer. In these optimum or ‘facilitative’ conditions the client concept of self can grow and unfold like the plant. The client would
Commitment and self-defense are two things required for the growth of a person. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness is a very well written book. This book is about a boy name Todd Hewitt who is the last boy in a town called Prentisstown in the New World. In Prentisstown there is a law that states boys don’t become a man tell their thirteenth birthday. One day he finds a girl name Viola in the swamp; he finds her because she creates a hole in the noise, which is a germ everyone one on New World has.
Drug trafficking, a multi-billion dollar global business, is of growing concern to almost all countries around the world. To be specific, it has been a concern to all governments, as part of their job is the protection of the citizens. With the interference of drugs, it is not helping because it leads to many diseases, crimes and the death of many people. Drug trafficking is mainly the global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws; and illegal drug trade which is considered a global black market.
Roger’s six conditions for positive change need to be positioned within his own approach to therapy to be understood as they can easily be accepted by any school but then take their meaning from a different context. That the helper makes a psychological contact with the person helped humanistically speaking means that they are accepted as ‘normal’ and like them. With the context of psychoanalysis this would embrace useful Transference and the acceptance of the expert position of the therapist. The same phrase clearly understood in very different ways. This ambiguity continues throughout all six conditions which is why they can be accepted by just about anyone yet not actually lead to a common approach. This is clear from the further conditions
Rogers says that the client should always allow himself to sense what he is really feeling, rather than convincing himself that he is feeling good when he is feeling completely different. There are parts of his personality the client needs to have a look at, so in return he can experience his real feelings. To experience his true feelings According to Rogers the client must break that protective core around them. In order to do this Rogers says the client must experience ‘’ Pure Culture’’ “Pure Culture” can be defined as letting oneself truly feel and be who one is without the overuse of a false face. This happens when the client is feeling there real selves and he is experiencing his feelings at a very high level, by this time during the therapy
A major assumption of Carl Rogers’s theory is that individuals have a “need for positive regard”. The congruent therapist who experience unconditional positive regard towards the client along with empathic understanding of the client’s internal frames of reference that accelerates therapeutic change. Rogers admitted that unconditional positive regard is crucial for healthy development and through this humanistic therapists help their clients to accept themselves and provide the conditions for personal growth to the client. This paper discusses the importance of unconditional positive regard and how it can help in the therapeutic relationship in order to precipitate therapeutic personality change. Also it examines the challenges of unconditional
Rogers believed that the way parents behaviour affects a child is if the child does what they want they would not be rewarded until it is done the way their parents wants it to be done. All individuals exist in their own world and there are sure to be changes, but how parents behave is most times mirrored by their children which lead them to be conscious of their parents’ way of wanting things done. He believed that most children are given love and support as long as they behave the way they are expected too. He refers to conditional positive regard which means there are strings attached to the manner in which they behave. In this case parents withhold their love from their children and through this they become separate from their true self,
Rogers believed that healthy psychological growth in a client will occur when the counsellor establishes a safe and non-judgmental relationship which allows clients to fully express their feelings (Rogers, 1961). In therapeutic relationship therapist needs to value the individual as a unique being that is capable of recognising what their problems are and that they are able to choose suitable solutions in order to become more fully functioning. According to Rogers (1977), research indicates the greater the degree of caring, accepting and valuing the client, the greater the chance that therapy will be successful. Unconditional positive regard is seen more as a personal attitude rather than behaviour. Therapists’ acceptance of his clients is “communicated by our way of being with them, rather than by anything particular we may say or do (Merry, 2014, p.137). Unconditional positive regard is communicated to clients through acceptance and respect. This doesn’t mean that all therapists will like their clients, however coming back to unconditional positive regard will allow therapist to get pass the clients behaviours and attitudes and see the humanity that lies in the centre of it
Carl Rogers first principle is what makes his form of therapy most different than many other forms of therapy. Rogers stress that when a therapist congruent with their patients, then this allows that patient to shed the fear of being a shame, shy or feel that they can not tell the truth. Rogers first principle is that a therapist is congruent with the client. Congruency displayed by a therapist welcomes a person's ability to explore who they truly desire to be without any judgment or repercussions. Roger believed that in a therapy session a person should explore who they desire to be. This concept ties the video and Rogers principle of congruency together. Throughout the video there where symbols of beings changing form. Note that the word
The death penalty was a feature of English law that the early colonists brought with them (Supreme Court Debates). The death penalty was first established in the United States back in the Eighteenth Century B.C. In the U.S 1,436 people were executed from 1977 through May of 2016. Most death penalty cases involve the execution of murderers although capital punishment can also be applied for treason, espionage, and other crimes (ProConorg). There are cons and pros to putting criminals on death row. Also, only certain crimes get the death penalty, and it’s not in every state.
