When the word God comes to mind, one usually thinks of divine order, harmony and justice. In The Iliad, that’s not the case. They are childish, they fight one another over petty things and rampage over mortals if they are discontent with something. The role of the gods are clearly a focal point to the epic. Without their presence, The Iliad would lose much of its excitement and enjoyment. There is no doubt though that the Ancient Greeks truly believed that these god’s would determine their glory and honor, which is in some ways very much the same ideas and beliefs we have today.
The gods in The Iliad have shown to clearly have some sort of control over the lives of mortals and also their faiths, as they choose which mortals they want to help. For example, the Greek gods intervene in the war to help their favorite mortals. During the Trojan War, different gods take different sides and show various acts of generosity towards their favorites. For instance, Paris proclaims Aphrodite as the most beautiful goddess. As a result, he becomes one of Aphrodite’s favorite and maintains a divine help during the war. This kind of help is very beneficial to have because it gives them an edge over their opponents. Another example is when Agamemnon refuses to return Khryses daughter back which results in Apollo intervening for one of its favorite mortals and causing mass destruction. The gods often do such things because rejection to do so may make them look inferior.
