In Elizabethan England, there were many different types of crimes and along with those crimes came many punishments. During this era the different types of crimes you could commit were endless. But if you were going to commit a crime, you really had to think about what your punishment would be and see if it was really worth it. For example in Elizabethan England, practicing Catholicism was considered treason and you could get beheaded as a result (Bumgardner 1). After researching crime and punishment in Elizabethan England, crime, punishment, and torture all played a big role in Elizabethan Life.
During the Elizabethan Era, the jail was used not used as a punishment for criminals like it is today. Instead, it would be used as detention for criminals. The jail would hold people that were awaiting their trial and would also hold people who were found guilty and were waiting for their punishment. The jail was also used to hold prisoners who were sentenced to transportation to other countries. The worst punishment you could receive was not execution but did involve hanging the prisoner till they were half dead. Once the prisoner was half dead, their body parts would be ripped open and thrown into a fire. This punishment was used to shame the person. If there was a case of murder or robbery, the culprit would be hanged at the place of commission of the offense. In a murder case, the right hand of the offender would be cut or burnt. If a person committed suicide, their body would be buried with a stake put across their body.
