Army Online Conduct/Social Media and the Army Soldier Social Media has become a staple in many peoples' daily lives. With Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram just a click away it is easy to update statuses to let the world know what is going on in your day to day routine. While updating family and friends does not seem like an issue, what the status entails could be an issue, especially for military service members. It is easy to violate Operations Security, or OPSEC on Social Media without the user realizing it. Privacy controls are available to shield personal information, but these controls are not as private as one would think. Anyone can hack into a Social Media account, in fact, The New York Daily News reported, "Facebook hack attacks strike …show more content…
Service members are not the only offenders when it comes to OPSEC violations and social media. Family members and spouses are offenders of "oversharing" sensitive information too. Posting on social media and websites about deployments, missions, accidents, and homecomings can give the enemy a great deal of information. For example, Facebook has a group or page for everything. Many Army bases have unofficial "wives pages" where family members can go ask questions, vent, etc. The issue with pages that allow spouses to vent and ask questions is that anyone can join and see what is going on in the community. When a request is sent to join a "private group" questions tend to be asked like, "how long you have been a spouse/family member, what branch are you affiliated with, etc.?" While these help to moderate random requests, anyone can google to find an answer that best fits the questions asked. Moderated by administrators who volunteer their time but cannot spend countless hours supervising unofficial “wives pages” leaves a lot of time for OPSEC violations to occur. Questions about upcoming deployments or homecomings are frequent on "wives pages," and other spouses chime in with their information. Many will argue that it is a "private group" but again, anyone can join these …show more content…
With the effortlessness and connectivity given by social media, tension has been increasing between military security and service members. While not all information posted is an OPSEC violation it can indeed pose a vulnerability to the United States military. OPSEC is essential and should be a priority during peacetime or war. Practicing mindfulness when online can help alleviate any incidents that may occur. Emphasizing situational awareness is imperative when navigating social media and other media outlets as well. Additional training for OPSEC recognition is essential so that service members have the education needed to make careful decisions when it comes to posting and participating in social media. The enemy is constantly adapting to technology changes; it is time the United States military do the same. A majority of those in uniform have grown up with social media; it is how they communicate. Service members understand for the most part that operations security is essential, but reminders occasionally given can ensure everyone is up to date on OPSEC and social media use. Operations security keeps everyone safe; it is time to take it
Nowadays, social media touches nearly every part of our lives. Industry or domains such as governments, military, corporations, financial institutions, and hospitals collect, process and store a great deal of confidential information on computers and transmits that data across networks to other
Open source intelligence based on social media in the 21st century is a vital component of the intelligence collection process. As people around the world use social media more it will become integral to the intelligence collection process. Since the up-climb of social media began in 2003, law enforcement has greatly adapted to the social media network in order to better communicate with the public and to improve their protocol. Much of police work is unappreciated and unknown of. Therefore, some departments have taken it upon themselves to educate the public via social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook. This is done in order to inform the community of what their department does, and to build confidence and trust towards their agency. Around the country, law enforcement agencies see social media as both beneficial and damaging. Thus, with the awareness that social media is here to stay, law enforcement has chosen to adjust to these social changes and to use them in their benefit.
Social media has become a world stage for many people to display and share their accomplishments, failures, and even their shenanigans. No one seems to care anymore if their boss, spouse, or conservative grandmother knows how wild that party they attended over the weekend was, or who their romantic fling was with that week. It’s a sad fact and even though most people do it, posting ones every day move can still affect their job and personal relationships.
The first action to be taken to advocate for the hiring of veterans and the establishment of collaborative programs for the veteran community will be through the use of different social media tools. To raise awareness on the issues, the use of Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook is best suited for this objective. Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn are the most widely used forms of social media today, with Facebook still in the lead for the most used social media platform in the world (Hutt, 2017). These different media platforms would raise awareness of the issue of veteran unemployment and veteran homelessness since the majority of the public is not aware of the issues veterans face. Collaborative programs within the community are needed to relieve the issue of veteran homelessness and social media would reach the community to implement this collaboration.
With the advancement of modern technology, social media is increasingly finding use in healthcare delivery and management. Health professionals including doctors, nurses and therapists have adopted social media to communicate with their patients and for health sensitization. Social media can benefit healthcare delivery in a variety of ways including fostering professional connections, patient and community education and promoting communication with patients and families. On the other hand, use of social media in healthcare exposes patients’ data to breaches and leakages creating confidentiality issues. Misuse of patient data results in serious career penalties for negligent medical professionals. Protocols have been established to oversee the use of social medial by health practitioners. The paper seeks to explore the recognized rules that regulate the use of social media, and its risks and benefits. Health professionals should utilize benefits of social media while adhering to confidentiality, privacy, and ethical guidelines for private or professional communications with respect to patient data.
There is a rising dominance of social media sites that allows users lives to become increasingly transparent. With full information about ones activities available for everyone to see, it blurs the line between personal and impersonal information. Personal information like where you were, and your private life information are now things that everyone feels free to share, and by doing so dismantling the boundaries of personal information.
Although problems with the inappropriate use of social networks are not new, in recent years, it has been observed by many authorities how the internet allows any actor to perform information operations with amazing ease and effectiveness. Indeed, several countries and individuals are using online multichannel platforms and social networks like Instagram, Snapchat Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, the mentioned sites allows any actor to collect an enormous amount of information on their potential adversaries and influence public opinion through propaganda and counter-propaganda activities. The United States Army is an organization that protects and defends against all enemies foreign and domestic. This protection extends to the American people and the democratic intuitions that we believe in. Enabling this process to work within its design structure is essential for continual trust in the United States
However, Soldiers are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice even when off duty, so appropriate social media conduct is expected of all Soldiers. Talking negatively about supervisors or releasing sensitive information for example, is punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). The 1st amendment of the constitution is a very important right to all Americans, but national security should come first. Soldiers using social media must abide by the Uniform Code of Military Justice at all times. Commenting, posting, or linking to material that violates the UCMJ or basic rules of Soldier conduct is
This is an era of massive violations of privacy rights and individual liberties due to the new technologies of surveillance, data mining, electronic monitoring, biometric chips, spamming, hacking, phishing, and security breaches at major private and public institutions. These new technologies make the protection of privacy rights far more difficult than in the pre-electronic past. Given the nature of the Internet, thousands or even millions of people can view these Twitter and Facebook postings in a very short time, and they can quickly go 'viral' and spread globally almost overnight.
The main argument of this text is social media being an investigative object. The authors of this text clearly illustrate how social media has acted as an investigative object.

Social media is a public outlet and very powerful form of communication that can have a significant impact on organizational, professional, and individual reputations. In the facilities where I work now, as well as other facilities I have worked in the past, there are strict guidelines pertaining to confidentiality and privacy. For example, we are strictly prohibited from posting any information that could reveal patient information. We also can not post patient images, videos or pictures, anyone else’s health information or any information that could violate patient privacy. Any communication or posting on social media can not display any obscene, threatening, intimidating or harassing comments about colleagues, patients, families or the
Whether a healthcare organization is supports unions or is against them, it should have a policy on unionism, and this policy should be communicated to its employees. Fried and Fottler (2015) explain that a positive labor-management relationship begins with this policy. A unionization policy will often include policies concerning wages, benefits, hours and conditions of employment, which Gamble (2011) says are the most common reasons for unionization. With clear policies and procedures regarding unionization, an employee can find the information they need regarding the most common reasons for unionization and proceed through the correct channels for change. A policy also shows that management understands that each employee is important and deserves respect and that time and thought goes into employee relations (Fried and Fottler, 2015). An employee can also see and understand the implications of unionization with a clearly outlined unionization policy (Gamble, 2011).
