In New York some high schools have two weeks of a role playing game near the end of the year. Role playing games with simulated violence are diverting for teens. Because role playing games help with team working skills, they are a distraction from stress, and bring the school together; I believe they are good for teens. In New York, multiple schools have a role playing tradition for the end of the school year. Although there's some reasons it should not be played, here's why I think it should.

In those 2 weeks near the end of the year, those students aren’t focused on their work. It relieves so much stress, especially for seniors. It's a fun way for students to hangout with friends. As the New Yorker article explains, “Killer, the last-man-standing game of water-pistol ambush, has become a key end-of-the-year ritual in several New York City high schools. At St. Ann’s, a private school in
Brooklyn Heights, the game lasts two and a half weeks and is especially ferocious.” So during those two weeks the focus of the students isn’t on school work, so they aren’t as stressed. It’s also a good way for people to become friends with someone they otherwise wouldn’t be friends with. They work on people skills and how to meet new people. It’ll teach teens that just because they’re not your friends doesn’t mean they can’t be. This is a good way for people to become closer, and bring the school together. An example from the New Yorker “Initially, each team of up to four students is given only the identities of its immediate prey. All other players are anonymous, so that in the days leading up to the game the school becomes a souk of intelligence-gathering and disinformation.” This means that the more the students get to know each other the closer the school will be. The students are working on their people skills and learning to work collaboratively.

Role playing games with simulated violence have a positive effect on teens. Because role playing work on team working skills, are a distraction from stress, and can bring the school together I think they can be a good thing for teens. Although there's some reasons why they shouldn't role play with simulated violence, there's more good than bad. I used to think that role playing was a great thing for teens. But after writing more and hearing what other people have to say I think it’s a 50-50. Role playing games could have a positive or negative effect on different people.
