Role of symbolism In the poem, the purpose of symbolism is using an object or reference to describe a deeper meaning to a story. The poem " Music of Spheres" by displayes that how to use symbolism to describe an object with deeper meaning. This poem is written by Jean Follain who was a French author, poet and corporate lawyer. The reason why I selected this poem, is because Jean Follain only used a few sentences to reflect its deep symbolic meaning of this poem. Language makes us human. It helps us to understand our everyday experience and ideas. It will become more powerful by using symbolism instead of the customary language. If the root doesn't get enough nutrients, the tree will dry out and eventually die. Human is just like a tree, water acts as the hope of human. His heart needs hope as a source of energy. He lost his hope and faith, his heart lack of the hope input and becomes cold and frozen. So he was walking on a icy road with hopeless future and frozen heart. Furthermore, Jean Follain says " in his pocket iron keys were jingling." (Line 2) It has effectively portrayed the man's psychological environment. " iron keys were jingling" has its unique symbolic meaning, it means the man's harsh life still continues, and his heart becomes cold and frozen. The " jingling" stands for heart beats of the man. Iron keys conveys a collective sense to the reader which the iron key is cold. The man seems like really sad and almost ready to give up on his life. In the next sentence of his poem, he says " and with his pointed shoe absent mindedly, he kicked the cylinder of an old can."(Line 3-5) Even though we sometimes lose our direction to the destination or completely lost of confidence, we will still keep thinking what happened in the past. Jean Follain used an object to describe a deeper meaning to the reader. We can see from these sentences, the man's psychological environment is so disordered. He felt that his heart was missing something, that there was something that was missing in his life, something that was making him feel heart heavy. In the next
