1. Understand own role and responsibilities in lifelong learning

1.1 Summarise key aspects of legislation, regulatory requirements and codes of practice relating to own role and responsibilities.

The key aspects of legislation which relates to my own role and responsibilities as a driving instructor teaching learners would be that I hold a valid ADI badge and adhere to the criteria as set out by the DSA to maintain that badge including regular CRB checks. Also that I must undergo regular check tests and to renew my ADI badge every 4 years. The regulatory requirements are that I must have a roadworthy vehicle to carry out driving instruction. If there is any accidental touching, then it is always followed by an apology and a reason as to why it had occurred.
When working with students in the car, you get to know the student very well, and quite often they do bring their personal life into the car. The student can be very emotional and this does impact their driving lesson. I have to be careful about the questions that I ask as I do not want to become personally involved, but the student does need to understand how emotions can affect their ability to drive. Sometimes the nature of the upset can be so severe, it may be in the interest of the student to terminate the lesson before it has started, as I have a duty of care to them and the members of the public. On some occasions, students have asked for help which is beyond my remit, and in these cases, I have referred them onto other professional bodies who are qualified to assist them.
Other boundaries would include contacting students to follow up appointments that had been missed. I have a duty of care to the student to notify them if I have arrived at the agreed time and date for a driving lesson and they are not available. I will text/call them at the location. I will wait for a set amount of time and if the student has not shown then I will leave a note through their door with details that I will call/text at a certain time.
