Rosa Parks, a civil rights activist once said, “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and hopefully, we shall overcome.” Little Man becomes aware with the issue of racism, and he realizes he can not let it affect him. Mildred D. Taylor’s, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, depicts a story of The Logans, a black family who has to deal with the struggles of racism, and fighting for their beloved land, in the 1930’s, in Rural Mississippi. Even with all of the racism the Logan Family has to overcome, the youngest children of four, Clayton Chester, called Little Man by his family, helps his family with his positive attitude. Little Man knows how to read even before he goes to school. For example, Cassie says to Mrs. Crocker, “Yes’m, he can. He been reading since he was four” (Taylor 26). Cassie explains to Mrs. Crocker that her younger brother had been reading since he was a toddler. When Little Man goes to school, and sees the foul and offensive language written in his book, he takes offense to it because he can comprehend what it says. For example, Cassie says, “Rapidly, I turned to the inside cover of my own book and saw immediately what had made Little Man so furious” (Taylor 24). Little Man is made upset when he is able to understand what the word in the book means. Little Man cares for his beloved family in many various ways. He cares very much about his older siblings, considering the fact they are his role models. For example, Cassie says, “Little Man jumped out of bed and pulled his clothes from the hanger where he had neatly hung them. I'm going too, he squealed” (Taylor 250). Little Man does not want his brother and sister to get hurt when walking T.J. home. Another time when Little Man is shown as being caring is when the fire takes place. For instance, he says, “Papa and Stacey and Mr. Morrison, Cassie! They in them trees! Then iron willed Little Man began to cry” (Taulor 263).
