In the book “Roll of Thunder, Here My Cry”, by Mildred Taylor, the characters of the Logan family deals with unfairness and racism throughout the whole book. As the story progresses, Cassie, one of the main characters, faces many ordeals of racism and unfairness along side her family and many other blacks in the area.
On the first day of school for Little Man, the Jefferson Davis bus drove by super fast enveloping them in a cloud of dust. “not before the bus had sped past enveloping him in a scarlet haze while laughing white faces pressed against the bus windows.” The laughing white faces were the white students who attended Jefferson Davis and they laughed at them since they were all covered in dirt. Barnett’s store to buy the things his mother wanted him to buy when Big Ma went to Mr. Jamison and told them to wait in the wagon. Mr. Barnett started to find the things they needed before a white woman came and Mr. Barnett started to help her in the middle of helping T.J. After Mr. Barnett finished, he came back but not for long enough because his wife called him to help someone else. As Stacey got uncomfortable and told Cassie they should leave, Cassie spied Mr. Barnett and went over to him to remind him that he was serving them first. “I assumed that he had not heard me. I was near the end of the counter so I merely went to the other side of it and tugged on his shirt sleeve to get his attention. He recoiled as if I had struck him.” After a couple attempts to get his attention, Mr. Barnett recoils when Cassie tugged on his shirt sleeve and told her to get out of his store. He also yells the “n” word and Cassie, not knowing why Mr. Barnett has done this says “I already know what I am!” I retaliated. “But I betcha you don’t know what you are! And I could sure tell you, too, you ole—”. This section of the book represents the racism and discrimination Cassie and her family dealt with since Mr. Barnett helped white people when he was in the middle of getting T.J’s order. Instead of going back to helping T.J after Cassie asked him politely, Mr. Barnett acts as if he was attacked by Cassie showing his hatred against blacks
