What were the most important reasons for the decline of the Roman Empire?
I think that the seemingly unpreventable Roman Empire was always bound to fall after the many aspects that made Rome such a dominant empire started to decline. The Empire declined for many reasons yet there are only a few major reasons that led to its 'death'. Most of the problems came from within the city and were not caused by a major military defeat. Many foolish decisions by emperors weakened the city and eventually caused the decline of the Roman Empire.

Firstly, the transition to appoint new emperors in the Roman Empire was never easy. The Senate, the army and the emperors personal body know as the Praetorian Guard decided who would take the throne. But this didn't …show more content…

Soldiers were called back as villages were raided and destroyed. The government made some ineffective and poor decisions which even made governing even more difficult. Some of these decisions included: Raising taxes to build defences, giving more money to the army to keep it running and murdering senators. Also, tension between the Senate and the Emperor to see who should have the most power in Rome. The people of Rome didn't want such a corrupt government so, to make things worse, they decided to leave because of the inconsistency of the Senate. This meant that trade came to a halt, roads and construction stopped and the army fell apart. This meant that Rome was vulnerable to barbarian attacks, invasions and the destruction of Rome. But, the government though they had a way around the situation by paying the Vandals and a few other barbaric tribes to stay and defend the city. This did not last long when the leader of the Goths, Odovacar, killed the emperor and became a fair ruler of Rome. The once grand empire, was now defeated.

In conclusion, the Roman Empire was not defeated on the battlefield, but it was defeated by the government itself. Greedy senators and emperors made very foolish decisions. This cost them not just the defeat of the empire, but sometimes, their lives. The empire, was always bound to fall, sooner or
