The Roman empire from 437 BC to 117 CE expanded, conquering much of Western Europe, the Northern rim of Africa, parts of the Middle East, and even most of present day England. By covering so much ground on several continents, it was easy for Roman influence to follow the soldiers. By spreading religion and reforms to make the territories act Roman, the Romans were able to incorporate a multitude of things to the world. It is common when looking at Washington D.C., the capital of the United States, to be looking back upon Rome. Much of its layout and architecture are built and designed from that of Rome’s imperial city. More than buildings have been carried over, mathematics reached heights in Rome that were only expanded upon more recently.
One of the ways that the Roman Empire influenced the world was through Architecture and
Beginning in the eighth century B.C., Ancient Rome grew from a small town in the center of Italy near the Tiber River into an empire that, at its peak, defeated and conquered most of continental Europe, Britain, western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands. From the start, the Romans showed a talent for borrowing and improving upon the skills and concepts of other cultures. The Kingdom of Rome grew rapidly from a trading town to a prosperous city between the 8th and 6th centuries BCE. Among the many expansions of the Roman empire, they started to gain dominance over other well-known practices and were able to widespread the Romance languages derived from Latin, the modern Western alphabet and calendar, and the emergence of Christianity

Here, one is able to identify that contemporary day America still possesses and develops upon a myriad of features of the Roman Empire. The educated elite within Rome impacted the perspectives and virtues of Americas Founding Fathers, as their values enabled them to fulfill their task. As seen here, “The educated elite of the thirteen-colonies were steeped in the Roman code of virtus…they held fast to their rustic virtues: sanctity of family, sobriety of conduct and demeanor, a stern sense of discipline… Romans achieved their mission, divinely inspired, to rule the world…they were the values the Founding Fathers.” (6). When one thinks of Roman architecture, many things come to mind, such as arches, columns, statues, and richly covered surfaces in marbles. One must stop to think that this empire, which gained power and influence in the first century BC, must have been influenced from the thousands of years of cultures preceding them in order to create their masterpieces of ingenuity. This phenomenon can be seen in our borrowing of ideas of ancient Greece and Rome for the construction of our capitol buildings in the United States. The Romans architecture was heavily influenced by Greek Architecture, in the way of columns and stone (Cartwright). The Coliseum is the largest of their structures, and Coliseum-inspired structures can still be seen around the world through football stadiums, or soccer stadiums. The Romans Pantheon inspired the Capitol Building, as well. The Capitol Buildings similarities to the Pantheon are so close, that the ceilings even look the same. Arches and heavy use of columns are both influenced by the Romans as well (Cartwright). The Romans were excellent architectures, and a lot of their larger structures are still standing, so it’s no wonder that they could influence buildings even
Classical Greek culture had a powerful influence on the Roman Empire, which carried a version of it to many parts of the Mediterranean region and Europe. Greek culture influenced the development of Roman civilization because at first Rome absorbed ideas from Greek colonists in southern Italy, and they continued to borrow from Greek culture after they conquered Greece. Ancient Greece has had an enormous amount of impact on culture in the western world. For this reason, Classical Greece is generally considered to be the seminal culture which provided the foundation of Western civilization. Rome conquered the Greek empire and its civilization, but Greek culture conquered imperial Rome. Furthermore, the Romans willingly
Rome's vast empire lasted for an amazing one thousand-year reign. Half of it referred to as the republic, and the other as the empire. However, after its fall in 5oo-a.d. Rome has still remained in existence through its strong culture, architecture, literature, and even religion (Spielvogel 175). Even after its disappearance as a nation Rome left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Its ideals and traditions have been immolated, and adopted for over two thousand years. Whether, it is through its language of Latin, its influence of religion, or its amazing architectural ability Rome has influenced almost every culture following its demise. The heritage of Rome has
