The romantic comedy is a subgenre that has as its central narrative the quest for love that almost always ends with a successful conclusion. It accents love in a light and upbeat manner while also frequently embracing sentimental or melodramatic story developments. Similar to every other genre, it has a set of characteristics or conventions that allow the audience to know what to expect. The key traits that allow one to recognize a movie as a romantic comedy are its realistic characters, traditional dating ritual, and slow story pacing. These conventions of romantic comedies can be further understood by analyzing the narrative functions of two films that depict positive images of true love and its power to transform one’s life: Roman Holiday and Notting Hill.
Romantic comedies typically feature handsome likable characters that the audience can relate to and accept their problems as

Instead of a woman finding a man who is incredibly wealthy and has a prestigious position, it is the other way around, almost similar to a Cinderella story but reversed. Gregory Peck’s need for money is what sparks most of the narrative. In Notting Hill, Julia Roberts is also quite serious, but less dramatic. Hugh Grant is an awkward but likeable guy who the audience identifies and sympathizes with do to his constant state of heartbreak. He is depicted as the more sentimental person in the relationship. During the beginning of the film he exclaims the cliché line, “I never would suspect this would be the day that changed my life forever.” Both films feature the male character predominantly, instead of the usual and expected female protagonist. Additionally, these films feature the best friend roles to the male leads. In Notting Hill, this friend role is so unrealistically ridiculous yet amusing that his appearance adds some comedic elements to the
‘When Harry Met Sally’ is a romantic comedy set from the mid 1970’s to the mid-to-late 1980’s. From the beginning the film seemed like the perfect example from Mark Knapp’s 10 stages of relational development. There was a plethora of talking and Harry was quite witty while Sally was very sweet and up-beat. As a personal opinion, at first the film seemed to be slightly boring plot-wise – a man and a woman meet to travel a ways to the city? Sounds like the perfect situation to ‘fall in love’ in and have a happily ever-after. Though, as more of the movie was watched, it became more interesting and less of an assignment requirement.
A very interesting movie On Golden Pond. Not only learning as you get older there are a lot of changes as well when exploring your adolescent’s years. Confusing, anxiety, anger, and a lot more feelings that occur throughout the journey to late adulthood. The movie was mainly on the characters Billy, Chelsea, Ethel, and Norman who were viewed dealing with biological, cognitive, sociological experiences while dealing with obstacles of family struggles.
Again, the representation of a man being helpless and powerless are traits commonly assigned to female characters. Whereas the representation of women being smart and helpful are commonly assigned to male characters. Hitchcock purposely gives the “male” characteristics to women characters and “female” characteristics to male characters in order to challenge the stereotypical gender roles.
Rom-coms have been a huge hit through the 21st century. Involving comedy within a romantic film. This appeals greatly to a young audience. I feel romantic comedies also help to suit a male audience
William Shakespeare’s play Much Ado about Nothing traverses the complex social, and emotional trials and triumphs of romantic relationships; Shakespeare’s perspective on the subject is both very similar to ours today, and different. Although filled with sexual innuendos, and humorous trickery and shenanigans, Much Ado about Nothing also dives into the complexities of social anxieties, defense mechanisms to cope with the social pressures, and the emotions involved.

The refined but playful elegance of the 1950s is often seen as the epitome of American culture. With innocence, comedy, and romance, this era springs to life in Saddleback College’s enticing production of “She Loves Me”. This colorful, quirky tale takes place in a quaint perfume shop, and the lively relationship between Amalia Balash (Alex McDermott) and Georg Nowack (Nathan James Corbett) reminds everyone that love can be found in the most unexpected places. Melodramas are well known to avoid realism and primarily focus on heightening emotions. This film tends to focus on the suffering for the leading woman, which usually targets the female audience. As we watch the suffering for our leading lady (Cary Scott) the story slowly reveals the true emotion. The true reason Cary is unable to achieve happiness in her relationship.
Many films or dramas about love always make me impressed by the power of love. Love can evokes people’s various emotions such as happiness, sadness and anger. Love encourages people to accomplish what they think is impossible or impracticable. In addition, love is an intense and direct feeling that I experiences the most in my life. It is Antigone and Death of a salesman that are the two plays which impress me with the expression of strong love among the roles. The play, Antigone, ends up with tragedy and creates two tragic heroes—Antigone and Creon. Arthur Miller takes advantage of memories, dreams, arguments and conflicts to make up the last day of Willy Loman’s life (Lifcharts.com). Love reflected in the two plays is various, complex and full of tragic feature. Haemon shows his love to Antigone by revolting against his father 's authority and committing suicide; Linda shows her love to Willy by defending him and protecting his American dream, and my friend shows love to his parents by quitting school to support his parents ' company.
Though the film itself strays from a typical romantic comedy, the structure of Silver Linings Playbook does not. Romantic comedies usually center on a single person’s development through the assistance of their soon-to-be partner. The theme is stated within the first ten minutes; in this case, it
William Shakespeare once told us, "All the World’s a Stage" —and now his quote can be applied to his own life as it is portrayed in the recent film, Shakespeare In Love. This 1998 motion picture prospered with the creative scripting of Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman and direction of John Madden. The combined effort of these men, on top of many other elements, produced a film that can equally be enjoyed by the Shakespeare lover for its literary brilliance, or for the romantic viewer who wants to experience a passionate love story.
For our project, we decided to show how Romeo and Juliet is a timeless play by connecting it to several modern movies, all of which share the theme of star-crossed or forbidden love. The three movies that we chose were Warm Bodies, The Fault in our Stars, and West Side Story. Warm Bodies features an unprecedented relationship between a human and a zombie, in which both sides refuse to accept and move past their differences. In The Fault in our Stars,

Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love And I'll no longer be a Capulet.” said bitterly by Juliet; in the famous balcony scene of the Literature masterpiece– Romeo and Juliet. Many people may wonder the love life of William Shakespeare; the master of poetry and art, who wrote thousand pieces of work about love that break peoples’ heart, but also heal peoples’ soul.
