Works from the Transcendentalism period are nothing like I have ever read before. The idea of going above and beyond is certainly achieved. Most people want to go above and beyond and live life fully and wholly, but most do not go quite to the level of transcendentalists. Authors during this time tried so hard to explain their experience of going above and beyond, things became confusing at times. From what I can gather, writers during the period of Transcendentalism were so lost in their deep thoughts they did not seem to focus on making sure their work made any sense. I think Romanticism works were very interesting and straightforward, while the works we have read so far in Transcendentalism so far have been very hard reads. Since many writers in the era of Transcendentalism felt that society should not confine them, they often made a point to do the opposite of what they were told. Many pieces of literature feature characters breaking many laws because they thought society was trying to control them. Some characters disliked society so much they even went to live completely alone in the woods. To me, this seems crazy because I do not understand how you could be happy without any human interaction. I feel like they would start to go crazy or become depressed if they were alone for that long. A reason why many characters in Transcendentalism went off to live alone was because they thought they needed to connect to nature. They felt that a way in which they could connect with the “oversoul” was through nature. Being isolated in nature could help one have time with just them and their thoughts.
