The Shakespearian play 'Romeo and Juliet' is based upon two main themes which are Love and Conflict. Shakespeare shows these two contrasting themes through the plot, language and the characters who interact with one another. The leading characters throughout the play are Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet who are known as star-crossed lovers because the opposing families have had an ancient feud against each other. In using these two themes Shakespeare creates the bitter turmoil and loving romance that is known as 'Romeo and Juliet.'

Firstly, the theme of love is demonstrated through the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet. Their love is known throughout the play as 'Forbidden love' due to the fact that their families have had a long-term feud against each other for years. An example in the play is when Romeo falls madly in love with Juliet at first sight, and he says, 'Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.' The theme of conflict is what creates the tension between opposing characters, but can also be about internal conflicts with the characters themselves. An example of conflict is the fight scene between Romeo, Mercutio and Tybalt. Tybalt threatens to fight Romeo and says to him, 'Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford. No better term than this: thou art a villain. 'Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt because he recently came back from the wedding with Juliet. But once Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo fights and kills him for the honour of his best friend. Consequently, he is then banished from Verona and goes into a state of depression because he believes that he will lose Juliet.
