Some individuals deserve to be put to death for the tragedy involving Romeo and Juliet. When deciding who to blame for the deaths of these two star-crossed lovers, the question of who should be pardoned and who should be punished is introduced. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Lord Montague should be pardoned while Lord Capulet and Friar Lawrence should be punished. Firstly, Lord Montague needs to be pardoned. Not only has his wife passed away, but his only child, Romeo, has tragically taken his own life, both occurring on the same day. Punishing him in the slightest way could impact his mental health and emotional stability to an unhealthy level, or an unhealthy state of mind. The deaths of his dearest and closest family have most likely …show more content…
When given several opportunities to provide his daughter with comfort during a time of despair and grief, he decided that forcing his daughter to marry a man much older than her that she had just met was the best solution to the problem. Of course, when Juliet rebelled against his ridiculous proposal, Lord Capulet was furious and told her she must find somewhere else to live. He left her, abandoned, neglected, and forgotten on the streets of Verona. So, not only has her cousin been murdered and her husband exiled, but now her father will not allow her to live with him. “Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!/ My fingers itch. Wife, we scarce thought us blest that God had lent us but this only child, but now I see this one is one too much and that we have a curse in having her. Out on her, hilding!/But, an you will not wed, I’ll pardon you./ Graze where you will, you shall not house with me./Look to ’t, think on ’t, I do not use to jest” (Romeo and Juliet 3.5.160-188). Lord Capulet upsets her even more by forcing the idea of marriage on her at such a young age, and he was not considerate of her delicate, fragile state at that time. Moreover, he completely neglected his dutiful post as a father when he abandoned his only child, beautiful
“Love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and awake- it’s everything except what it is”(I.i.165). At the end of Romeo and Juliet, the Prince says “Some shall be pardoned, and some punished”. There are many different ideas of who should be pardoned and who should be punished for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. The play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is about a tragedy of two star crossed lovers who want nothing more than to be together forever. “…Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” (2.2.35-36) Romeo, a Montague, who is young and passionate, meets Juliet at a Capulet party. When they meet, it’s love at first sight. Juliet, a Capulet, is a beautiful young lady tired of being controlled by her father, Lord Capulet. The two families are in a never ending feud that comes between Romeo and Juliet’s love. In the course of four and a half days, Romeo and Juliet plan their marriage with the help of Priest Friar Laurence and Juliet’s Nurse. After the couple is married,
“Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!” (5.3.256). In this story, a feud of two families (the Montagues and the Capulets) will be ended by the deaths of their children Romeo and Juliet. During this chain of events, there are certain people who should be punished… and those who should be pardoned. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Lord Montague and Benvolio should be pardoned, and Nurse should be punished.
There were 6 characters that died in the play and some people that lived should be punished. There is obviously somebody that can be blamed out of everyone alive for what happened to Romeo and Juliet. In the play Romeo and Juliet Lord Capulet,Nurse, and Friar Lawrence should be punished. First Lord Capulet should be punished. First reason would be because he was verbally abusive towards Juliet.
At the end of Romeo and Juliet, the Prince says: “Some shall be pardoned, and some punished” (5.3.319). Who do you think should be pardoned and who should be punished? You will need to answer the question using specific details from the text. You must follow MLA format and maintain a scholarly voice.
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Old Montague should be pardoned and Old Capulet should be punished. Old Montague should be pardoned because he never did anything wrong. Old Capulet should be punished because if he wouldn’t have forced her to marry Paris, she wouldn’t have killed herself.
When Romeo is banished, Lord Capulet tells his daughter that she will marry County Paris. When Juliet says that she is grateful, but refuses, Capulet says “Hang thee young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o’Thursday, or never after look me in the face. Speak not. Reply not. Do not answer me. My fingers itch,-Wife, we scarce thought us blest that God had lent us but this only child, but now I see this one is one to much and that we have a curse in having her. Out on her, hilding!”(Act 3 Scene 5). Then he continues saying, “God’s bread! It makes me mad. Day, night, hour, tide, time, work, play, alone, in company, still my care hath been to have her matched. And having now provided a gentleman of noble parentage, of fair demesnes, youthful, and nobly trained, stuffed, as they say, with honorable parts, proportioned as one’s thought would wish a man-and then to have some wretched puling fool, a whining mammet, in her fortune’s tender, to answer “I’ll not wed,” “I cannot love,” “I am to young,” “I pray you pardon me.”-But, an you will not wed, I’ll pardon you. Graze where you will, you shall not house with me. Look to’t, think on’t, I do not use to jest. Thursday is near. Lay hand on heart, advise. An you be mine, I’ll give you to my friend. An you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets, for, by my soul, I’ll ne’er acknowledge thee, nor what is mine
Lord Capulet should be pardoned for the deaths of Juliet and Romeo. During the party when Tybalt and Lord Capulet see Romeo at their party, Lord Capulet doesn’t get bothered with Romeo being there. Lord Capulet says, “Content thee, gentle coz, let him alone,” (Shakespeare I.v. 63). Lord Capulet says this because Tybalt wanted to fight Romeo for being at the party and Lord Capulet told him to calm down, and told him that Romeo isn’t doing any harm. That same night; Lord Capulet defended Romeo over Tybalt, he states, “ Well said my hearts- You are a princox, go,” (Shakespeare I.v. 84). These two quotes show that Lord Capulet had nothing against Romeo, and he chose peace over war.
Many shall be punished but there are many that shall be pardoned for example friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence tried his best and broke many laws just to reunite the families and make Romeo happy. He didn't take a single life and tried to make everything harmless which didn't go so well but even though friar Lawrence didn't stop trying to bring joy to Romeo and juliet. He sent Romeo the message and gave it to messengers but he failed. Even though he failed his intentions were pure. Another innocent person lost in the violence was was Paris who didn't harm anyone but only wanted to be with the love of his life juliet. He didn't know anything about Romeo until the end so he couldn't be punished for stealing Romeo's love. Also juliet's parents forced juliet to marry Paris and Paris didn't force anyone therefore he should be pardoned. The person who should be pardoned first before anyone is the nurse
In Romeo and Juliet, a grieving father and husband, Lord Montague should be put to death. His actions during the play are unacceptable and should be dealt with. He is the cause his family's death, and should be held accountable. Friar Lawrence should also be punished for his actions because he gave Juliet a potion that made her look like she was dead, which made Romeo kill himself. But Benvolio on the other hand, he was shown in the play breaking up a fight scene so he shouldn’t be punished.
Romeo, who is the son of Montague and Lady Montague, has been tragically banished from our dear city, Verona. But the narrow minded and unthankful Romeo is as arrogant as always claiming that banishment is a penalty far worse than death. Instead he should be happy that the kind Prince has taken mercy on him, since the law originally appointed death for him. This shows how simply banishment was not enough of a punishment to teach Romeo a lesson.
I am going to start with the end and say, “Some shall be pardoned and some shall be punished. For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” (5.3.308-310). I wanted to start with this because it shows how love can affect so many people when it really is just a feeling you get. It shows why Romeo and Juliet are not to blame for their deaths.
The first suspect that I have called to proven guilty or innocent is Fate a.k.a. Fortune that deals with "the stars," which is a greater power. I find this Fortune guilty. This fortune is trying to interfere with Romeo and Juliet's love life, making it more impossible as if it was not already. This suspect is not going to be defended because it is involving itself in someones elses business and their love life.
Studies have shown that forgiveness makes you happier and healthier. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” The story of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, takes place in Verona. It is about two families, the Montagues and Capulets who are not very fond of each other. The feud they have causes many tragic moments to happen within many of these character's lives, especially Romeo and Juliet. Likewise, Friar Laurence helps Romeo and Juliet through many difficult times. Friar Laurence should be pardoned because he is helpful and trustworthy.
