Think before you act, a simple quote that holds a lot of meaning. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a prime example of how you should think before you act. The play is about a forbidden love between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet who both belong to rival families in Verona, Italy. A lot of things can be taken away from this play but The most important lesson is to make good decisions by taking the time to carefully evaluate all details. The first example of this is that Romeo and Juliet did not think through their marriage. For example, Romeo and Juliet have agreed to get married and Juliet asks for a time and place. Romeo and Juliet have met a few hours ago at a party and kissed. Romeo then sought after Juliet when the party ended and they both talked and eventually led to both of them agreeing to get married. “Thy purpose …show more content…
For instance, Friar Lawrence came up with a plan to fake Juliet’s death so she can get out of marrying Paris and get together with Romeo. Just before, Juliet is distraught after she is forced to accept marriage with Paris by her father and then she goes to Friar Lawrence for advice. This illustrates Friar’s irresponsibility because Friar doesn’t think to just tell everyone of Romeo and Juliet’s marriage but instead proposes a plan that can end in even more problems. Faking Juliet’s death means that he then has to reveal later on that Juliet is actually alive and that he tricked everyone. Not many will take the news with open arms and few will be okay with Romeo and Juliet’s marriage. If Friar just revealed everything, he could have prevented a big mess and everyone would eventually learn to accept it. Let’s not forget that Romeo and Juliet died because of a failure to this plan. Friar Lawrence's decision to go through on a plan that will cause more problems down the line conveys his
The Friar had good intentions when he married Romeo and Juliet, as shown in this quote, “For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancour to pure love” (2.4.91-92). In this quote, Friar Lawrence explains his reasoning behind marrying Romeo and Juliet, he thought that by marrying the two, he could stop the feud. This did not work as no one told the rest of the families and the Capulets tried to marry Juliet to Paris. The Friar also failed to get the letter to Romeo that would have told him that Juliet wasn’t dead. If Romeo had received this letter, he would not have committed suicide in Juliet's grave when he returned to Verona. Also, if the Friar had gotten to Juliet’s grave any earlier, he could have saved both Romeo and Juliet. The following quote is from the final scene of the play, “Miscarried by my fault, let my old life / Be sacrificed, some hour before this time, / unto the rigour of the severest law” (5.3.271-274). In this scene, the Friar admits the part that he played in Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. He volunteers himself to be punished for this, but the rest of the families and the Prince don't want to punish him. Although he meant well, Friar Lawrence’s actions resulted in the deaths of Romeo and
Loyalty is the quality of showing constant and complete support to one another. It is about the people who stay behind your back like family and friends you can trust. Similarly, the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare shows a great deal of loyalty by Juliet, Friar Lawrence and Romeo. Loyalty and disloyalty is shown by Juliet whom betray loyalty to her parents by loving the son of their enemy, Friar Lawrence whom stays loyal to his friendship with Romeo by helping them hide the relationship and risking his life and Romeo posterior the death of Mercutio.
Friar Lawrence never checked if Friar John deliver the letter explaining Juliet's fake death until it was too late. Friar John didn’t know how important the letter is “Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood,/The letter was not nice but full of charge” (IV. ii. 18-19). Romeo never got the letter Friar Lawrence was supposed to send.
He didn't think through the future for Romeo and Juliet. For example Friar Lawrence knew that the feud between the two families might come to an end if Romeo and Juliet got married, but he didn't think about the consequences involved. Another situation where he doesn't plan out veer effectively is when he gave the letter to Friar John. Friar John could not get the letter to Romeo in time thus Romeo getting false information from another source. Not thinking about the obstacles can lead to great repercussions.
Conducting a plan without thinking it through beforehand can cause problems in the end. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story entailing two lover’s backfires when a failed plan ends the fate of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence, the peacemaker and Church enthusiast of the town, makes impulsive decisions that affect both families. He should have remained true to himself about his beliefs in the beginning instead of rushing around attempting to make everyone happy. In William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence can be to blame for the tragedy due to his immaturity, irresponsibility, and his lack of trust worthiness, demonstrating the author's message that a plan that seems right may end poorly without thinking everything
If the Friar had made sure that Romeo was knowledgeable of what Juliet was doing by faking her death, then Romeo would never have though Juliet was actually dead and then killed himself. Friar Lawrence is like a neutral party in the play. He is a well thought of priest who is tired of thefeuding and fighting between the Capulet family and the Montague family. As the only religious figure in the play, his character is meant to represent self-control, moderation, and
For example, his decision to marry Romeo and Juliet in secret shows a lack of foresight and consideration for the potential repercussions. In Act 2, scene 6 he says, "I'll tell thee as we pass, but this I pray." Additionally, Friar Lawrence's plan to fake Juliet's death In Act 4, scene 5 demonstrates his willingness to deceive and manipulate in order to achieve his desired outcome. His actions ultimately result in a chain of events that culminate in the deaths of the
An example of this is when Romeo speaks of how there is no sense of living without being in Verona with Juliet, this is an example of just one of the times that one of them doesn’t think about their actions and the consequences. “There is no world / Thou cutt’st my head off with a golden ax And smilest upon the stroke that murders me.”(3.3.?) The only thing that mattered to them was that they were together they did not think of their families and how it would affect them and their surrounding. They also didn't think of the repercussions or consequences of their actions. They asked the Friar for his help and asked him to get involved, they took the advice that he gave them, and followed his instructions,When the Friar tells Juliet , “ Hold, daughter/That copest with death himself to ’scape from it An if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy”,(4.1.70-75) In this quote Friar Lawrence tells Juliet of a way that she and her true love can be together without having to hide it. She followed his instructions and put her trust in him that the rest of the their plan would go accordingly ,and all though it did not end up that way Juliet was still willing to kill herself if it meant that she would get to be with her one true love for all eternity.
When you think of betrayal, lying, and death, the first thing that comes to mind is most likely not Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. This story is full of tragic events, almost all of which could have been prevented. However, there is one person who is the cause of almost all these events. Friar Laurence is the main person responsible for the tragedy at the end of Romeo and Juliet because he is impulsive, misleading, and a bad friend. To begin with, Friar Laurence is one of the most impulsive characters in this story.
When Romeo first laid his eyes on Juliet, he instantly fell in love and his feelings began to pour out. The description of Juliet by Romeo continues, as he compares her to a beautiful dove and all the other ladies around her to awkward crows. Instantly, every women, including Rosaline, became irrelevant to Romeo. All he desired and all he could focus on at that moment was, Juliet, the woman he knew he was destined to marry. Romeo had been trapped in a deep depression a few hours before he laid his eyes on Juliet, Romeo's feelings drastically change once he sees Juliet which proves to be love at first sight. Romeos early display of affection presents him as a man who is in love with the idea of love, and in turn allows audiences to like for him, just as they imagine he would for them. Although Romeo's character was introduced a few scenes prior, he was depressed and not himself. So, the moment he met Juliet for the first time it was also the moment the audience met the real Romeo for the first time.
When Juliet hears that the wedding has been moved up to the next day, she drinks the
Friar Lawrence appeared to have good intentions behind his actions. At first, he was surprised to hear Romeo falling for Juliet so quickly after he was just pining after Rosaline, and warned him of
Tut! I have lost myself;I am not here:This is not Romeo, he’s some other where.(1.1.190-191) This quote tells quite a few things about Romeo. The first thing is that he wonders off of what his task in hand is and convinces people in a certain way. Second is he has a good imagination and can picture him somewhere else.
A boy and a girl had set eyes on each other for the first time just a few hours before, and now they had already fully committed to the marriage of each other. This occurred without the consent of each others family, without the knowledge of who each other are, and without the knowledge of each other’s inner personalities. These types of decisions are made consistently throughout the story by characters who don’t think about their actions and the consequences that they will have. In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare uses characterization in order to argue that many tragedies occur because of characters being too hasty with their decisions.
Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film, Romeo + Juliet effectively appropriates the Shakespearean 16th century love tragedy. So why has Luhrmann decided to appropriate Romeo and Juliet? By changing the context, Luhrmann effectively makes the play relevant, discussing his contextual concerns of the 1990’s. This is done through the use of themes in the film, love, family disputes and hate which have remained similar to the original play, although the way they have been presented are different, in particular the form and characters. The form has had an obvious change as the original play has been adapted into a film. Characters in the film have also been appropriated to correspond with Luhrmann's contextual concerns. Hence, Luhrmann successfully appropriates the original Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet by maintaining similar themes, but altering the form and characterisation to fit his contextual concerns.
