Edmund Burke, an 18th century Irish philosopher and statesman, cited “No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its power of acting and reasoning as fear.” Strictly speaking, no other emotion can affect a person’s performance or behavior as fear. Specifically, one will act without thought or reasoning when fear is present. Fear is the most effective emotion to the brain because of its ability to modify one’s performance and the elimination of rational thoughts. Most would agree that there are many other emotions that are much more compelling to the mind than fear. Love is a powerful and passionate emotion that can affect one’s mind effectively as fear. Such as, in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the character Juliet was willing to fake her own death to be with her lover, Romeo. In this situation, when one is in love they will do anything out of reason to be with their significant other. However, fear is the most effective to one’s mind as it is able to modify their actions and understandings. First, fear can cause one to act without reasoning. Generally, one will erase all of their thoughts and only think about fear. For instance, in Lord of the Flies by William Goulding, the characters eventually stopped caring about being rescued from the island but only about killing and surviving. When fear becomes present, it’s mainly all that one can focus on because it takes over their thoughts. Additionally, one uses fear as a way to rule a kingdom or monarchy. An example from Lord of the Flies is the character Jack used the “beast” to scare the group of boys on the island as a way to control his kingdom.
