Rooney Rule This quote was by Steelers co-owner Dan Rooney II and was speaking about what his father Dan Rooney (former chairman/owner of the Pittsburg Steelers) thought him as a young child. "The biggest thing he passed on and I hope we continue it, is to treat people right." Dan Rooney is the inventor of what is now known as the Rooney rule: it’s the practice in which all NFL teams have to interview at least one minority during coaching vacancies. There is mixed support for this rule, with those against viewing this practice as reverse discrimination, which hurts more than helps any minority’s chance of getting hired. Ten years after the rule was implemented, NFL owners gathered again to discuss issues about the hiring cycle. Not a single
Athletes who play football share the same goal as athletes who play soccer: score the most goals to win the game. In football, there are two areas on opposite sides of the field where one can score points by bringing the football over the goal line. Soccer shares this same concept by having two nets on opposite sides of the field where one can score a point by kicking the soccer ball into the net. Also, both sports share the concept of having an offense and defense, and both sports each have eleven players on a team on the field at a time. These are only few of many similarities between these two sports, but in actuality, they are significantly different. The rules, rituals, and concepts of both sports distinguish
Surprisingly, Football is not the topic of "Football" by Louis Jenkins; rather, 'a man's brown leather oxford' (Line 3/4) is the star of the show. The tone of the poem at first is serious, the speaker resolute to do his job as quarterback. Football terminology is evident and differentiates the solemness of the first two lines from the altered tone in the next section of the poem. The shift takes place with a hasty 'what the hell is this?' (Line 3), invoking a completely different view from the speaker. Although, there is still a sliver of the previous tone in the au courant one, the author meant for the new tone to be amusing in the mix-up with equipment and the speakers comparison to pancakes. The speaker juxtaposes 'clear corn syrup' (Line
Football is often labeled as a dangerous, unsafe sport, but there are many good things that come along with playing football. In the past two weeks I have learned about the risks that accompany football. Many kids suffer with concussions and face injuries from the sport, which scares many people away. But, despite the risks and the unsafe label, I would allow my child to play football because it promotes health, builds friendships, and helps gain toughness.
The purpose of this research paper is to identify the current state of the Rooney Rule and determine its effectiveness. The Rooney Rule was implemented back in 2003 to avoid potential lawsuits and minimize the injustice in the hiring of minority head coaches in the National Football League (NFL). Since then, other companies such as the English Professional Soccer and even Facebook have considered implementing the Rooney Rule to help balance out the scale in the number of minorities in leadership roles. The background of the Rooney Rule is initially outlined, followed by its influence in the NFL; the controversy over its effectiveness. Then analysis the rule’s significance in other countries and field, such
In the past, black coaches were moved slowly up the ranks than white counterparts, despite equal performance and skill sets. White head coaches
This was apparent when, upon boarding the busses to training camp, he noticed that the players had segregated themselves between each bus. Coach Hines made them get off the bus and board the busses as offense and defense, racially integrated. His values, like Coach Boone’s, were consistent with respect, integrity, loyalty and teamwork for those with whom he worked as well as with the players whom he coached.
ESPN explains that their employees are supposed to be respectful and responsible and represent the NFL’s values and the permissible actions that are done for the good of the league. It has been brought up that the league should dismantle its current personal conduct policy and just leave it with the bare minimum, general rules. “This bare essentials policy allows the justice system to deal with substantial behavioral breaches by players” (Goff) so that the NFL can be removed from any decision-making or investigating involved with a player’s personal conduct issues. By removing the NFL from these positions of authority, it will return the power to the “criminal justice system [which should] [have] primary responsibility” (Goff) over the players; this way the NFL does not have to worry about their players’ actions every second of every day. One cannot argue that the concept of allowing the justice system to take care of any conduct issues that arise in the NFL is not such a disastrous idea. Sometimes the league is too involved with player, even team, problems which can cause turmoil among the media and fans because the league accomplishes all they can to keep their players safe and more importantly, maintain the positive image of the
In the begging of the film, Herman Boone which is Denzel Washington was brought in as an assistant coach to join the all-white coaching team. Couple days later, because of high school rule Coach Boone had to be a head coach. But at first he was unwilling to take the offer the head coaching job at first because same things had happened to him when a white coach was selected as head coach over him in South Carolina. In this scene you can tell Coach Boone respects everybody and not hating people. But soon He finally accepts the head coach when he sees that the black people lived in the town saw him as a symbol of pride and hope because he could be the one could overcome the racism in the town. When he talks with coach Yoast, coach Yoast was worried because his white kids won’t start the football team but Boone told him “I aint going to cut them and eat them. Best player will play color won’t matter”. In this sentence he doesn’t care black or white or not, he wants to best player to win the games
It may not be thought about much but there are some racial games that are played. Although the Rooney Rule has at least given minority head coaches a chance to potentially get hired because they actually get a chance to get an interview, many still see it as just a rule put into place to make it seem like everything is equal and to save face from scrutiny about racial issues in sport. In 2003, Mike Millen the president of the Detroit Lions was fined for not interviewing a minority. He was not fined for intentionally not interviewing minority coaches, he actually contacted five different minority coaches and each of them turned the request for an interview down. Each of them felt like the job was already Steve Mariucci and felt like they were just being interviewed just so that the Detroit Lions could fill their obligation to interview a minority coach. The problem not only lies with collegiate and professional sports organizations and the issue of not interviewing and hiring more minority coaches and managers but also stems from this minorities feeling that they don’t have a fair shot at the position. Some minorities looking for a head coaching position also have negative feelings towards getting called up for an interview just because of rule that was put into place that forces teams to do this. Some feel like if the Rooney Rule wasn’t in
Bend it Like Beckham (2002/3) is a romantic comedy written, directed and produced by Gurinder Chadha, a Kenya-born British film maker who grew up India. Director Chadha’s films often reflect on her complex background. Unlike many comedies, Bend it Like Beckham is filled with plenty of important themes. One of them addresses the importance of cultural integration.
The targeting rule in college football could be the “most significant rule” change ever made in the game (Matter). According to Greg Johnson of the NCAA, the rule was passed by the Football Rules Committee of the NCAA in February of 2013 to be implemented with the 2013 fall football season and is consistent with the committees’ continued attempt to address player safety. The new rule now places a tougher penalty on the defensive player for dangerous contact with the offensive player, notably direct helmet-to-helmet hits, or hits aimed above the shoulders of the offensive player. This direct, helmet-to-helmet contact is known as targeting. Although the implementation of the new targeting rule is controversial, it will help to
What you want in comparison to what your family expects form you is a common disagreement through most family households. In the movie ‘Bend it like Beckham’ we saw the conflict between jess and her parents on how they feel and what they want for her, how jess sees the situation and how it is resolved. Throughout Jess’s journey she is constantly pulled in what she truly wants and what here family/culture expects (internal conflict).
In modern football, Administration means efficient organization, provision, protection and advancements of activity. As a coach of the football club, not only Ferguson needs to assign the daily training and design the strategy to the match, he also need to responsible to the administrative affairs to the club running, such as reading the report of the evaluation for player from scouts, having the meeting with CEO of the club and listening the summarizes from the staff from different department to realize the status of the players and situation of the club running.
Manchester United lost the Premier League title on the last day of the season, but they still lay claim to another title, though: The world’s most valuable sports team. Forbes estimates Manchester United (Man Utd) is now worth $2.23 billion, 19% more than No. 2 Real Madrid, which is worth $1.88 billion.
The game of football is being attacked. We see it every day in the headlines and on the news. The medical concerns are obvious. The game has taken more than its share of criticism. Even President Barack Obama said that if he had boys he wouldn’t let them play football. LeBron James publicly said no football in his house. So the question is asked all the time, Why would anyone want to play football? And why would anyone let their kids play? Here’s my answer. I believe there’s practically no other place where a boy is held to a higher standard then football. Football is hard, it’s tough, it demands discipline, it teaches obedience, it builds character. Football is a metaphor for life.
