Rosa Parks: A Great Hero

Who inspires me is rosa park because she stood up for what was right. She knew it was wrong that people with darker skin were mistreated. So she made a great decision and changed how people thought and did to people with darker colored skin. That's why I like her she knew it was wrong and did what was wright. If she never did that how would people with darker colored skin be treated today. I'm very thankful that she did that it changed the world and made it better.

Civil rights activist Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama. At the age of two she moved to her grandparents' farm in Pine Level, Alabama with her mother and younger brother, Sylvester. At the age of 11 she enrolled in the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls, a private school founded by liberal-minded women from the northern United States. The school's philosophy of self-worth was consistent with Leona McCauley's advice to "take advantage of the opportunities, no matter how few they were." Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus spurred a city-wide boycott. The whites quickly pilled on the bus and all the blacks pilled in the back.. Ms. Parks on the other hand didn't move. Quickly the driver threatened to arrest her. As the driver began to get angry Rosa calmly with all the confidence in the world just sat. Rosa Parks got arrested that day for every black in the nation. She wanted to prove to all people that she would be treated as anyone else in the community.

“The only tired I was, was tired of giving in” (Parks). I was tired, tired of being oppressed, and tired of being stepped on by the law, and my fellow people. That was the only tired i felt. The Montgomery Bus protest sparked a fire that would be felt throughout the entire country, and it was the spark that ignited the fire of the civil rights movement that shook the world. The boycott was the first of it, once light was shown on the problem, she began travelling cross country spreading information about civil rights, and sparking more peaceful protest. Although, congressional reconstruction included Amendments that abolished slavery, granted citizenship to all people born in United States or naturalized and granted the right to vote to all people no matter race, color or previous conditions of servitude. However, these amendments were ratified. Some people disagree these changes and opposed to give those rights to African american people. On December 1, 1995, 42-year-old Rosa Parks had got on and sat in the middle of a bus, right behind the first ten seats that were reserved for whites, but on that same fated day, a white male had boarded the same bus as her, and Parks, along with other black people, had been asked to move back, but instead of moving back, she just stayed in the seat that she was in and quietly refused to give up her seat. She had been arrested that day and had been convicted of violating the laws of segregation. Parks had appealed this conviction, which challenged the legality of segregation (Rosa Parks Bus). Her arrest had sparked a 381 day boycott on the Montgomery bus system, which helped lead to a decision made in 1956, decided by the Supreme Court, to ban segregation of whites and blake when it comes to public transportation. After her parent separated, Rosa was live with her mother, the family live in Edwards farm, where Rosa experienced her youth.

Rosa lived 8 miles from school, she could not take the bus, so she walked, 8 miles to, 8 miles back. Once or twice , Rosa stood up to white boys who were teasing her or her brother. Rosa was very brave as a child. As you can see, Rosa had tough times when she was a child. Now, lets go to the future and see what Rosa’s adulthood is like!

Mrs. Parks was hauled off the bus in handcuffs and sparked a war against the injustice of colored people. But did you know Rosa Parks didn’t start this movement, she was not the first. Nine months before Rosa Park’s heroic act a 15-year-old girl by the name of Claudette Colvin took a stand by not giving up her seat to a Caucasian woman. Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin both lived in the same city and took the same bus line. Two women took the same path yet one was shunned by her community while the other was praised and became the face of the movement. What made Claudette so undesirable? Claudette was a teenager at the time and the NAACP and other black organizations felt teenagers were unreliable. Additionally, Claudette didn’t have the “right” hair nor did she possess the “right” skin tone, she didn’t have the “right” look. Whereas Rosa “fit the profile”, with her lighter skin and less Afrocentric look Rosa appealed to a larger array of people (CITE). How many times in ones life has someone heard the word “no”? Probably more times than you can recall. For us, this word’s meaning is undervalued in day to day life; but December of 1955 this word meant the difference between going home in peace and giving up her seat or standing her ground and going to prison for simply saying she would not give up a bus seat. Rosa grandparents both were former slaves and powerful advocates for racial equality.

During the Civil Rights Movement there were numerous violent acts committed against African-Americans. Many whites perpetrated these vicious acts when African-Americans were engaged in peaceful non-violent demonstrations. There were also a number of whites that were sympathetic to the African-Americans struggle for equality and they supported and assisted the movement.

Imagine sitting on a bus when the driver tells you to give your seat away because you are black, but you are on the black section of the bus. Rosa Parks got treated unfairly because she was black.
