Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee Alabama. The inspiration for her name came from her maternal grandmother, Rose. She was the first child of Leona (Edwards) and James McCauley. At six, black soldiers returning from World War I, acting “as if they deserved equal rights because they had served their country” and being shown that this was not the case. 2. Several years after she was born, her family moved to Pine Level. While living in Pine Level, she was educated in a rural schoolhouse. In the novel Rosa Parks: My Story, Rosa wrote “My mother took me to live with her parents in Pine Level, Alabama, when I was a toddler. Later, my father joined us, and we lived as a family until I was two and a half years old.” (10) Her father left Pine Level to find work. She did not see him again until she was five and her young brother was three. He stayed for a few days and then left again. Her family openly talked about slavery and racial injustice. Both of Rosa’s grandparents had been enslaved. The McCauley’s often discussed the history of slavery at home. They also talked about the situation of blacks in Alabama, and “how to survive, not getting into trouble by confrontation with white people who were not friendly.” (Jeanne Theoharris p.6) 4. As a child, Rosa had chronic tonsillitis. Rosa often stayed sick in bed for days, unable to swallow without being in excruciating pain. It lasted until she was nine and her mother had finally saved enough money to pay for a tonsillectomy in Montgomery. Because she was sick so often, Rosa missed a lot of school.
