Rough Draft Animal Testing

Jeremy Bentham, a great philosopher, once said, “The question is not, ‘can they reason?’ nor, ‘can they talk?’ but ‘can they suffer?’” In this quote, Bentham is trying to tell us that the way we use animals is inhumane and that they are more than just ‘subjects’ or ‘experiments.’ Animal testing negatively affects nature and humans because it is unreliable, too many animals die in the process of it, and the government wastes a lot of money funding for it.

Here are just a few of those reasons: It is cruel, wasteful, unreliable, and there are even multiple humane alternatives to testing.

The term “animal testing” refers to procedures performed on animals for the benefit of humans. An estimated 25 million animals are tested on each year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing. It is used for biomedical research, medical usage, behavioral research, cosmetics, and the list goes on. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 B.C. Many argue that animal testing is necessary for research, but with the medical technology we have today, this has been proven incorrect. The cost of animal testing is hundreds of thousands per year in the U.S. Animal testing is cruel and should not be allowed because it is abusive, expensive, and there are substitutes.

Imagine this, you and a big group of people are stuck in the desert and there's no water in sight.You send a young man to look for water in the burning hot sun.He finds a lifesaving amount of water miles from everyone else .Then he brings it back to the people saving their lives but risking his own.Even though the man's life was risked, you saved more people than you hurt.This is what animal testing does.Animal testing saves thousands of lives every single day.

Supporters of animal testing might say that the tests help find new research that gets us one step closer to curing many diseases but they are misguided. Research shows that animals have different structure when compared to human beings making them poor test subjects. Animals have significantly different anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences that make it hard to compare to humans. This fact proves that animal testing will get us nowhere in curing or helping humans in any way. Studies have shown that it creating an animal model that mimics the human model is nearly impossible . This statement is also false because animal tests may mislead researchers into ignoring potential cures and treatments.If it misleads the researches then it does not make sense for animal testing to still exist. One example of this case is chemicals that are proven harmful for animals but proven beneficial for humans. Animal testing is unnecessary and should be banned because of how they treat the animals, Animal testing is pointless, and because of how they suffer and die.

Approximately 26 million animals are used every year in the United States alone for research and commercial testing (“Background of the Issue” 1). For years, legislators have debated the pros and cons of animal testing, and laws were passed to attempt to fix the inhumane treatment of the cute, innocent testing subjects, the animals. Although the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was revised numerous times, “the species most commonly used in experiments (mice, rats, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians) comprise 99% of all animals in laboratories” and are the animals that are specifically exempted from protection under the act (“Experiments on Animals” 2). A simple fix to animal cruelty during testing is to use alternative methods since human and animal bodies already vary greatly. For years, animal testing was the best option because there was no alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system; however, in the age of technology, there is no reason for millions of animals to be killed due to the severity of the testing. Therefore, animal testing should be banned because alternative methods provide more accurate results since human bodies are very different than animal bodies; furthermore, animal advocacy organizations should promote cruelty-free products more so customers know what to purchase and use.

For many years, the field of science has used animals in medical experiments worldwide, because of this innocent animals are being killed everyday. They are being tested with new drugs, new treatments, and by many makeup companies. Connecticut recently celebrated the passage of the “Beagle Freedom Law”, a law that requires laboratories to work with charities and rescue groups to find homes for research cats and dogs. Animals are being tested so humans do not have to be but animal tests do not reliably predict results in human beings, although animals are the closest thing to humans. Most experiments involving animals are flawed, wasting the lives of innocent animal subjects. Over 100 million animals suffer a year from testing. Testing animals is a lot more expensive than alternative methods and it is wasting government research dollars. Animal testing is not only a bad idea, but it is also inhuman and it should not be tolerated. The FDA should stop allowing animal testing. An animal does not give out the same results on a test than a human would.

For decades, people have been using animals as the go-to method for testing scientific breakthroughs, but not only is this concept outdated, it is a cruel punishment inflicted on harmless creatures. Animal cruelty is a well-known problem around the United States that is a growing issue for debate. A study has shown that less than 2% of human illnesses are found in animals and over 98% are ineffective on animals (Peta2). “The Food and Drug Administration reports that 92 out of every 100 drugs that pass animal tests fail in humans” (PETA). Not only does animal testing hurt the animals, it is a waste of time. These are just some of the reasons why animal testing is pointless and should be banned. It is time that the United States recognizes animal testing as unacceptable because of its negative effects on both humans and animals: it is inhumane for many reasons, it proves to be very expensive and costly, and it’s pointless on many accounts.

This innovation has caused much harm to many animals while also hurting the opinions of animal activists around the world. Animal testing is also known as the use of animals in experiments and development projects usually to determine toxicity, dosing and efficacy of test drugs before proceeding to human clinical trials (Biology Online). The use of animal testing has been around for throughout all of history, it also carries its disadvantages as they diminish the lives of many animals along with their unspoken opinion while also having some advantages, and lastly this notion is very expensive (Scutti).

According to “Breakthroughs Might Mean the End of Animal Testing” if a product or chemical is safe for animals, only 8% of those products will work on humans.(John Ericson 1) Animals have been used for testing for thousands of years, due to their similarities with humans. Over the years public support has significantly decreased. The cruel practice has sparked controversy and needs to be stopped. Animal testing is used throughout the U.S which is why it needs to be banned. If animal testing was banned worldwide, it would prevent millions of animal deaths.

Animal testing has many advantages that have made a better society for people. Animal testing can be defined as, “the use of non-human animals in research and development projects, esp. for purposes of determining the safety of substances such as foods or drugs” (“Dictionary 1”). Animal testing is literally how it sounds to others. Animals are being tested on in order to try different products made by scientists in order to better the society.

Ever since animal testing had begun for human research we have been able to develop a ton of cures that have saved millions of lives. This perspective states that animal testing is good because it helps us humans as a species find cures for something we never would've thought the cure would be. Evidence has shown that every big major medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has come directly through animal testing. Without animal testing we would never have had penicillin antibiotics.
