Roxy is distinguished as an ironic character because she is a one sixteenth black slave woman, who considers herself of higher importance than the other slaves. If one were to only look upon her they would fail to recognize her black heritage; however, her speech identifies her as a slave woman, Among other black saves she acts in "...a high and sassy way" (Twain 9). Roxy, when among slaves believes herself to be superior due to her racial percentage. She acts rude around the other saves; however, around white people her behavior changes. Roxy acts "...meek and humble enough [around] white people" (Twain 9). Roxy knows that around untainted white people she must act the way a slave should act.
