A nurse must exemplify professionalism, especially in an environment that creates increased risk for loss of life or further injury. There are many aspects that are involved with professionalism in nursing, and many expectations set up on the nurse.

This is a requirement that a person acts towards others and the public with the watchfulness, attention, caution and prudence that a reasonable person in the circumstances would use. If a person 's actions do not meet this standard of care, then their actions may be considered negligent, and any damages resulting may be claimed in a lawsuit for negligence. Professional workers owe a specific duty of care to all vulnerable people with whom they work. The standard of conduct and behaviour expected of people in their professional role is higher than for other people because of the professional training they have received and the level of responsibility they assume.

Health professionals are required to act and behave in a certain manner in accordance with their profession. Therefore specific statements, ethical guidelines, and codes of conduct are created and introduced to each health discipline to assist practitioners in providing safe and effective client care. Professional identity is the reputation and overall image an individual portrays in their discipline. These standards such as being competent, trustworthy and respectful are important factors that influence an individual's professional identity and the way the public views them. Over the decades, the field of nursing has been facing difficulty with receiving acceptance as a respectable occupation. This is because there were often certain prejudices associated with the profession (which made it hard to attract good candidates). However, in the last several years, nurses have become an integral part of any health care team. To fully understand how this took place requires examining the historical trends. This will be accomplished by focusing on: self-regulatory issues and the way social perceptions impacted career decisions. The public expects nurses to have high standards of professional behaviour. For nurses, this involves a high degree of knowledge, suitable behaviour, well developed skills and a desire to improve their skills. A high degree of knowledge for nurses means to have gained a recognised degree and the right to practice. For example, New Zealand nurses must be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand. We need to be cautious about what behaviour we reveal in our professional and personal life. An example would be social networking, posting anything that may offend someone’s privacy and dignity (Social media and Electronic communication, 2002). Professional behaviour requires nurses to act in accordance with the Code of Conduct and ensure our actions are ethical, as we are responsible for the quality of health care offered to the public (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2012). Accurate knowledge, good skills and positive attitudes are key to well-developed professional behaviour. Being open to peoples’ professional advice and learning from it, is an important part of professional behaviour (Milton, 2008).

In a highly respected profession such as nursing, professionalism is an important element to staying employed and setting one’s self apart from the rest of the applicants when competing for a potential job. By definition professionalism are the qualities and traits that describe a professional. While knowledge is crucial in any profession, according to an article published by the University of Kansas (2012), “all medical professionals must strive to retain those humanistic qualities integrity, respect, and compassion that constitute the essence of professionalism.” Whether you work in a hospital or administration these three qualities encompass the core of nursing and exemplify what it means to be a professional.

Unlike most Christian religions, the Jewish worship on Saturday or what they called Sabbath Day. Weekly Sabbath is a day of rest observed by them and by some Christian minority such as Seventh-Day Adventists. In the bible, Sabbath commemorates the day God had rested from his work of changing the earth. This day had been established and made holy after God had seen the changes he had created.

The nursing profession is one of many portrayed by the media. In its simplest form media is how information is shared and stored. Media covers a wide range of services, advertisements, brochures, pamphlets, TV shows, films, novels, and magazines, digital, electronic, it goes on and on. Media is more accessible these days; the internet and wireless technology makes it easy for many people to access information on a wide scale. As information is shared by the media the public creates an image. This image may be right or it can be wrong, it all depends on the media’s accuracy. Nurses have been depicted in many forms over the years. These depictions can influence the public’s opinion of the profession as well as the likelihood that the profession will be considered for future students. Nurses need to take a more active role in how the profession is portrayed by the media, they need to work together to portray the profession in its best light in order to recruit and retain nurses.

Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
