In 1725, Russia sent explorers out to claim Alaska. When Vitus Bering and George Steller discovered Alaska, they claimed some of the islands like Kayak Island. Russia wanted to expand and grow, so the large piece of land called Alaska was prime land for the country. Russia knew there was a lot of benefits to this land like the amount of resources and lack of population. Russian tsars started a trading company. Though fur was Alaska's biggest trade, Russia took advantage of all opportunities for exports even including ice which was traded to the Southern states of the United States. Even with the trading company, the population of Russians in Alaska only ever got up to roughly 400 people. Years later another couple of explorers landed on Alaska land like Captain James Cook, who landed in nowadays Cook Inlet in Anchorage. Even still, the first Russian settlement was on Kodiak Island in 1784.
In 1859, Russian Minister to the United States, Edouard de Stoecki, came to the United States and offered Alaska to purchase. The thought behind selling the piece of land to the U.S. was that the U.S. could help keep the threating Great Britian in check in the Pacific region of the world. Russia was involved in the Crimean War. The British, French and Turkish were against Russia. Russia could no longer defend the waterways around

Indians arrived in America some 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. Archeological findings and Radiocarbon testing suggested that the prehistoric people who populated the Americas were hunters following the herds of wooly mammoths. They walked from Siberia across a land bridge into Alaska. They headed south toward warmer climates, slaughtering the mammoths as they went. As the glaciers melted, the oceans rose and covered this land bridge, creating the present-day Bering Strait and separating Alaska from Russia. By the time Christopher Columbus arrived, they were millions of what might be called First Americans or Amerindians occupying the two continents of Americas. The first noted documentation of the Beringia theory of the peopling of North America was by Jose de

Alaska is one of the many few states that obtains numerous energy resources such as oil and gas. Ranking second in the nation in crude oil production, many oil reserves are found in the Alaska North Slope and Cook Inlet basins. Prudhoe Bay is also the highest oil field in the United States and North America with a production of 400,000 barrels per day. With that, Alaska’s economy is based upon four factors, petroleum revenue, non petroleum revenue, federal revenue and investment revenue. Being so reliant on oil, in 2015 after a decrease in oil, the state began going into a budget crisis. For every $5 drop in oil prices the state loses $120 million. From 2015 to the present, barrels used to run from $100 each to now $40. Fund revenues have
The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867 for 7.2 million U.S. dollars. Alaska became a U.S. territory on May 11, 1912 and gained statehood on January 3, 1959. After the United States’ purchase of Alaska from Russia, controversy stirred as to the official boundary between Canada and the United States. The boundary separating the two countries was only vaguely defined at the time. The territory dispute dates back to 1821 between Russian and the British Empire, before the U.S. purchase of the territory. In 1825, Russia and the British Empire signed a treaty to define the international border. Land claims eventually overlapped after the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia with several British Empire claims located
There are many states in North America. Formally known as the United States of America. From New York to California, you could find millions of different types of people, and cultures from around the world. But how about a state that is so isolated from them all, that many people forget it was even added as the 49th state to the country? The lone state of Alaska is to the north west of the major states and if laid on top of the other states, would cover about two-thirds of the land. And for a state that is so large, it is surely simply thought of as the coldest state. Alaska is much more then that, and has a lot of history behind just a land of snow and mountains.
In the mid to late 1800’s brought about the “Treaty of Cession referred to indigenous people of Alaska as "uncivilized tribes." Such designation in legislation and other agreements caused Alaska Natives to be subject to the same regulations and policies as American Indians in the United States” (Benson, 2015). This was also followed up the 1884 First Organic Act, disputing Alaskan Natives any claims for the land they occupied, and the Major Crimes Act of 1885 that would not allow natives to process any criminal acts. This prompted the start of the Alaska Native Brotherhood (ANB), this organization united all the different tribes/clans of Southeast Alaska to bond together to press the US government for equality for all Native Alaskans (Benson, 2015). For several years, the Tlingit people fought politically against the US government for control and rights to the land they inhabited for centuries. Though the Tlingits won small advantages in the battle for ownership, such as the 1935 congressional ruling that allowed both the Tlingits and the Hiada Indians the right to sue the Federal Government for a land dispute. It wasn’t until 1971, when President Nixon signed in action the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, becoming the largest land claims settlement in United States History. According to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act,
Even though Russia wasn’t founded until 25 December 1991, its history traces back to the 9th century. During this period, the first signs of the country’s infrastructure began. Creation of trade routes enabled empires being supplied, while leading to the country’s growth. When the 10th century hit, we got the first mention of Moscow. At the time, Moscow was a small settlement that would soon become the pre-eminent city in Russia (A Brief History of Russia). By the 15th century, Moscow became the capital of, which consequently became, Russia. Moreover, in the centuries that would follow, Russia would battle through many wars, variety of leaders who wanted to take the country in different directions, weak infrastructure, communism, and failures of economic growth.
