Russia’s Interference In the 2016 American presidential election, Russia hacked into the voting system, and skewed the votes in favor of Donald Trump. In 2013 there were records of President Trump talking about how he has started to gain ties with people that were high up in the Russian government.“Well I’ve done a lot of business with the Russians. They’re smart and they’re tough.”(Horwitz, 2017) this was stated in an interview with David Letterman. And for a while President Trump, over tweets, talked a lot about how many similar ideas he and Putin had with each other. While Barack Obama was president he put up a few sanctions on Russia, to keep their economy in check without having to start a war, because America found out that Russia …show more content…
That is until federal agents found out that Trumps foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, had been lying to them (Ward, 2017). Papadopoulos repeatedly told the F.B.I. that he wasn't in any contact with Russia during the 2016 election. To this day he was apparently still contacting Russia because someone there said that they would go and tell him some secrets about Hillary Clinton's emails and secrets (Waldman, 2017). The F.B.I. eventually got enough evidence on him to arrest him on July 27th. According to Vox.com Papadopoulos originally pleaded guilty to the charges, but did not formally announce this until October 5th. And even after the formal plea a special council member, Robert Mueller, somehow got it the court to keep silent because he didn't want the President's reputation to be damaged (Ward, 2017). Now that it has been uncovered everybody is aware that the foreign policy adviser that Trump had hand picked, went and lied to the F.B.I. and had direct contact with Russian higher-ups. During the late part of October Paul Manafort, and Rick Gates were put under house arrest. While the F.B.I. was investigating just what had happened during the 2016 election they found out the Paul Manafort had 3 passport all with different numbers, a fake email, and a phone that couldn't be traced because it was under a completely different name. While the F.B.I. was diving
Both men have been indicated on a series of tax crimes, all of which are no where near connected to Trump.
The countries involved mandate system were France and Britain. France and Britain asked the arabs to help them weaken the ottoman empire. In return France and Britain would help them set up their own country. After the war France and Britain did not keep their promise, instead they divided up the country between themselves which started the mandate system. The mandate system divided what was the ottoman empire into 3 parts. One was the former communities of the ottoman empires which was left alone. Central africa was controlled by Britain and South-West africa which was controlled by both Britain and France.
Today, with the power of the internet and social media, information is much easier to access, with that, information on the Russian ties will come out faster than ever before. The access to social media is making the scandal much wider known to the American public. During the beginning of the Watergate scandal, most of the American public had little to no knowledge of the events until late in the case, in 2017, minutes after the emails hit wikileaks, articles were inside the pockets of almost every citizen in the United States. With the speed of the internet in today's time it is likely that we will
Jessica Taylor of NPR talks about how “Donald Trump's praise towards the Russian President Vladimir Putin” is creating controversy once again after his interview on Thursday to state-funded Russian Television. It is pretty obvious to the everyday American that the U.S. lags behind Russia in the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and that as America's global influence diminishes, a potential nuclear war with Russia could have earth-shattering effects. With these rising tensions and a nuclear war threatening on the horizon, one would imagine a President to work to relieve the possible threat. No President since Ronald Reagan has made efforts to work, or possibly find an ally within Russia. Over the past 8 years, President
The memo also revealed the FBI and DOJ failed to notify the FISC that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign and the Democratic National Committee gave Fusion GPS more than $9 million to fund Steele's efforts to compile the dossier.
Nixon’s attorneys argued that Nixon had the right to not give up the recordings due the executive privilege right. They argued that the tapes were confidential and no one had a right to view them. The court disagreed with Nixon and decided that the executive privilege power wasn’t enough to keep the tapes out the supreme courts hands. This meant that Nixon had to comply with the subpoena and release the recordings. Not even three weeks later, the Supreme Court reached a unanimous vote. The court discovered that Jaworski had found enough information that the recordings were indeed relevant to the break in. The Court then decided to reject Nixon’s claim of executive privilege. Soon after the decision, Nixon resigned. This landmark supreme court case is known as the Watergate Scandal. This case is such a landmark in Supreme Court case studies because it showed that the president doesn’t receive special privilege because of his title. He is not insusceptible from judicial process, and must obey the court and give up any evidence subpoenaed by the courts. Although the doctrine of executive privilege recognizes the presidents’ great degree of privacy from the courts; if the evidence involves matters of national security or other sensitive information, the president cannot withhold evidence.
It later came to light that Nixon was not being truthful. A few days after the break-in, for instance, he arranged to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in “hush money” to the burglars. Then, he and his aides hatched a plan to instruct the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to impede the FBI’s investigation of the crime. This was a more serious crime than the break-in: It was an abuse of presidential power and a deliberate obstruction of justice. Meanwhile, seven conspirators were indicted on charges related to the Watergate affair. At the urging of Nixon’s aides, five pleaded guilty and avoided trial; the other two were convicted in January 1973.
Now this document is still considered to be a key instrument, which played a significant role in reducing the heat in the Cold War. Though the critics of the Act blasted it by saying that it gave the Soviet Union legitimacy over the territories it had acquired in Eastern Europe during the Second World War, due to the inclusion of certain clauses regarding the inviolability of the national borders and respect for territorial integrity However, it may be pointed out that the Final Act simply stated that "frontiers" in Europe should be stable but could change by peaceful internal means. Ford also reaffirmed that US non-recognition policy of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia’s incorporation into the Soviet Union had not changed. The Helsinki Accords served as the groundwork for the later Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), established under the Paris Charter.
There has been claims that the Russia hacked the U.S 2016 presidential election and Putin personally gave the order. This might be possible because of the rivalries between the two countries since the Cold War. The two countries has long history to outshine each other. There is no relationship between the two countries before the World War II, but both countries united against the Nazis. After the war, there has been competition between the two countries on who can perform better in field of science and technology. The two countries wanted other countries to follow and live by their ideologies. The rivalry between the countries doesn’t just evolved during the 2016 presidential election, but has
I'm not loyal to either party which means I can remain objective. I don't know if Russia did these things or if they helped Trump. I do know that prominent people from both parties are calling for investigations. Some of whom sit on various intelligence committees and receive reports that the public will never hear about. If it were only Democrats demanding these investigations, I'd be a lot more suspicious.
Oligarchy as it is known in Aristotle’s politics; is a government run by a small group of people, ‘elites’. However, the oligarchy which this essay addresses is currently referred to in Russia as “a very wealthy and politically well-connected businessman...one who is the main owner of a conglomerate of enterprises and has close ties with the president” (Aslund and Dabrowski, 2007; 144). In the 1990s Russia’s economic reforms are said to have created the rise of a small group of oligarchs who gained an overwhelming amount of power and control. By 1997, this small group of previously unknown businessmen and bankers, often with gangster ties, had acquired control of many of the key parts of the Russian economy. Why did they emerge? It is argued by David Satter that three processes facilitated the emergence of the oligarchs. The first was hyperinflation and the social, economic and political consequences. The second was the process of privatisation, and finally the third was criminalisation (Satter, 2003). However, were these powerful oligarchs just a phase during the transition from Soviet to Post-Soviet Russia? Even with Putin’s efforts and declaration to distance the oligarchs from politics and power, and start a war against them exemplified by the Khodorkovsky affair, are oligarchs still significantly powerful in contemporary Russia? What is the role they play in Russia? It seems that the power of those original oligarchs of the 1990s has decreased or been concealed in
When Trump’s campaign was just taking off, “a 35 page dossier written by an ex British Intelligence agent compiled many allegations about Trump and Russia, even including that Russia had blackmail over Trump” (Osnos et al. 4). Senator of Arizona, John McCain, “passed the dossier to the FBI in hopes of an investigation being placed on Trump” (Osnos et al. 5). This was the start of Trump’s vengeance toward director of FBI, James Comey. When the dossier was released to the public, Trump and Putin had some words to say about it. They both “portrayed the dossier as a fake and full of false accusations” (Osnos et al. 3). This made the accusations of Trump and Russia being the arbitrators behind the hacking more evident than before (Osnos et al).
Russia, officially known as the Russian Federation, has a total area of 17,098,242 sq km (“The World Factbook”) and is the largest country in the world. It is about 1.8 times the size of the United States (“The World Factbook”). Most of Russia is either large stretches of plains or areas with a lot of forests and mountains, with the exception of the Siberian Tundra. It is difficult to perfectly describe Russia’s climate because of it’s large size. However, in general, the country only has two seasons, summer and winter. In the summer they have very warm, continental weather and they have very harsh winters with a lot of snow. Russia is plentiful in natural resources. They are particularly
Winston Churchill once remarked that “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried”. In agreement with his statement, this paper will examine the problems of democratic governments using specific examples, and compare it to the failure of fascist governments in Nazi Germany and Italy and communist governments in the Soviet Union and China.
