Ruth Wakefield was the inventor of these “accidental” gooey chocolate chip cookies. She was born on June 17,1903 in East Walpole, Massachusetts. Her parents were Fred Luther Graves and Helen Vest Jones Graves and together they had three children. Her father remarried when she was 12 to Harriette Ruggles Graves. Although there is little information concerning her youth, here are some facts you should know about Ruth. During the time she was born, women had very few civil and political rights. Women were only seen to be beautiful, demure, and loving. In the 19th century, women were given the right to vote in local elections but they still did not have a Parliamentary vote. For college, Ruth went to Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts, now called Framingham State University. After she graduated she taught home economics at Brockton High School for two years before marrying Kenneth Donald Wakefield. They got married in June 26,1926 and had two children. Her first cookbook, Toll House Recipes Tried and True was published in 1931. Ruth was famous for making chocolate chip cookies but it also was because she was a dessert genius. Her Indian pudding was lauded by Duncan Hines in 1947 he proclaimed “It was one of my favorites”. Well everyone wonders how the “accidental” chocolate chip cookies were born, she wasn't trying to make chocolate chip cookies she was trying to make Butter Do Drop cookies. She needed baker’s chocolate but she didn't have any in hand so she used the Nestle chocolate that Andrew Nestle gave her. She put it in the batter expecting it to melt but it did remain its original shape. She called them Toll House Crunch
